What Organisms Cause Acute Epiglottitis in the Post- H. influenza Vaccination Era?
Discussion Epiglottitis is also known as supraglottitis and is caused by inflammation of the supraglottic structures and epiglottis. Usually the cause is infectious but other trauma such as thermal injuries or ingestions can also cause the disease. Before the widespread use of its conjugated immunization, Haemophilus influenza type b was the most common cause and it was usually thought of as a pediatric disease process. In the pre-immunization time period, acute epiglottitis in children was 3.47-6.0 cases per 100,000, and in the post-immunization period has declined to 0.3-0.7 cases per 100,000. However it appears that

Clinical and epidemiological aspects of herpes zoster disease in a primary care setting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Zoster vaccination uptake was low. A national program for adult vaccination, including zoster vaccination, should be developed, and a guideline to direct primary health-care professionals in the management of HZ infections should be implemented.PMID:36618136 | PMC:PMC9810876 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_933_22

Pediatric herpes zoster ophthalmicus: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: HZO occurs in both healthy and immunocompromised children. Recognizing this treatable condition is essential for reducing ocular and systemic morbidity. Long-term follow-up and assessments of the impact on health in adulthood are lacking. More systematic study is needed to determine the incidence of HZO in children and appropriate diagnostic and treatment protocols for the care of pediatric patients with HZO.PMID:36949170 | PMC:PMC10033303 | DOI:10.1007/s00417-023-06033-0

Incidence and consequences of varicella in children treated for cancer in Guatemala.
CONCLUSIONS: Varicella is a significant problem in children treated for cancer in Guatemala, where effective post-exposure prophylaxis is limited. In the absence of universal varicella vaccination, strategies to improve recognition of exposure and the future use of novel inactivated vaccines currently under investigation in clinical trials could mitigate this burden. Position statement on infection screening, prophylaxis, and vaccination in pediatric patients with rheumatic diseases and immunosuppressive therapies, part 2: infection prophylaxis
Conclusion: Based on current evidence and a Delphi process, we provided consensus and updated recommendations on prophylaxis and treatment of infections to guide those caring for pediatric rheumatology patients. What is Known: •Data largely derived from adults find that infectious diseases and related complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with immune-mediated rheumatic diseases. •It is crucial to be aware of the preventive measures that should be implemented to prevent these infections in children, although most guidelines are often extrapolated from adult cases. What is New: •In the ...

Primary Varicella or Herpes Zoster? An Educational Case Report From the Primary Care Clinic
This article focuses on the educational discussion of the primary differential diagnosis, evaluation for possible complications, and management of this uncommon clinical scenario. We also reinforce the importance of immunization in preventing re-emergent diseases as a critical element within primary care management.PMID:35509746 | PMC:PMC9057244 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.23732

A quick algorithmic review on management of viral infectious diseases in pediatric solid organ transplant recipients
Front Pediatr. 2023 Sep 4;11:1252495. doi: 10.3389/fped.2023.1252495. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTPediatric solid organ transplant is a life-saving procedure for children with end-stage organ failure. Viral infections are a common complication following pediatric solid organ transplantation (SOT), which can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Pediatric solid organ transplant recipients are at an increased risk of viral infections due to their immunosuppressed state. The most commonly encountered viruses include cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), ad...
