Blog: No surprise at a Queen ’ s Speech that delivered nothing
In last week’s local elections, the Tories took a hammering at the ballot box. Losing nearly 500 council seats is anything but a ringing endorsement of the party in power, and losing flagship councils in the capital is a bad look for a former London mayor. At UNISON, it was just as we expected, because we know our members’ biggest concern – just like many voters across the UK – is the cost of living crisis. It’s a crisis that deepens with every day the Tories remain in power in Westminster. There’s no sign of it abating and news coverage tells us every day about how much people are struggling. As the results we...

Effects of Drugs and Chemotherapeutic Agents on Dental Implant Osseointegration: Narrative Review
CONCLUSION: Systemic medications that enhance osseointegration include mineralization promoters and bone resorption inhibitors. On the other hand, medications often given to the elderly with systemic problems might interfere with osseointegration, leading to implant failure. However, to validate the provided research, more human studies with a higher level of evidence are required.PMID:35674294 | DOI:10.2174/2772432817666220607114559

Blog: Proud to welcome in Pride
Today, we welcome in Pride season when UNISON activists will again join Prides across every region and nation to celebrate our LGBT+ members and the wider community. UNISON’s LGBT+ members bring so much to our union, and make it a diverse, wonderful organisation to join and to work for. A year on from the last time I wrote about Pride month, it’s sad that such little progress has been made in our society and even worse, that in some ways, the UK government is taking huge leaps backwards. One in five LGBT+ people have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity in the ...

Antitussive drugs--past, present, and future.
This article reviews our current understanding of the pathogenesis of cough and the hypertussive state characterizing a number of diseases as well as reviewing the evidence for the different classes of antitussive drug currently in clinical use. For completeness, the review also discusses a number of major drug classes often clinically used to treat cough but that are not generally classified as antitussive drugs. We also reviewed a number of drug classes in various stages of development as antitussive drugs. Perhaps surprising for drugs used to treat such a common symptom, there is a paucity of well-controlled clinical st...

Resolving acetylated and phosphorylated proteins by neutral urea Triton-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis: NUT-PAGE.
Abstract Protein acetylation and phosphorylation are key modifications that regulate both normal and pathological protein functions. The gel systems currently used for analyzing modified proteins require either expensive reagents or time-consuming second dimension electrophoresis. Here we present a neutral pH gel system that allows the analysis of acetylated and phosphorylated proteins. The neutral pH urea Triton-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (NUT-PAGE) system separates proteins based on their charge at pH 7.0 and generates discrete bands from each acetylated and/or phosphorylated species. In addition, the ge...

Don’t use essential oils for asthma. Here’s why.
Alright, we need to talk. Those of you who follow my blog know that I don’t shy away from controversial topics and that I don’t have a problem speaking my mind. I try to do it in a respectful, informative, and somewhat humorous way. But I saw something this morning that needs to be addressed, and it’s not funny at all. As I was eating breakfast before work, I saw a link about essential oils posted on a fellow pediatrician/blogger’s Facebook page, where he made some important observations about the author’s claims about medical uses of essential oils. I agree with him completely, but I think the point needs to be ...

http://media.boston.cbslocal.com/CBSBOS_0605201517560600000AA.mp4 BOSTON (CBS) – Spaghetti squash is a vegetable not familiar to many of us, but today that’s what was on the menu at the demonstration kitchen at Boston Medical Center. Tracey Burg, a registered dietician and former chef, shows patients at BMC how to roast it, toss it with marinara sauce, add some turkey meatballs, a sprig of basil and voila! A tasty and nutritious dish is created. The demo kitchen works closely with BMC’s preventative food pantry. Whatever is fresh in the pantry is what Tracey brings to the table. Her classes cater to...
