Status quo of pain ‐related patient‐reported outcomes and perioperative pain management in 10,415 patients from 10 countries: Analysis of registry data
ConclusionsThis comprehensive evaluation demonstrates that many patients in this international cohort reported poor pain-related PROs on the first postoperative day. PROs and treatments varied greatly. Most of the variance of the PROs could not be explained. The findings served as a basis for devising and implementing QI programmes in participating hospitals.SignificanceIn preparation for quality improvement projects, we comprehensively evaluated pain-related patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and treatment practices of 10,415 adult patients spanning 10 countries. PROs were generally poor. Demographics, country and surgical ...

Daily changes in pain, mood and physical function in children hospitalized for sickle cell disease pain.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study demonstrated that children made daily improvements in physical function and pain over hospitalization for VOE. Mood was related to changes in pain and physical recovery. Assessment of physical function and mood during hospitalization may help guide strategies to better understand the pain experience in youth with SCD hospitalized with VOE. The ethics of Canadian entry-to-practice pain competencies: how are we doing?
CONCLUSIONS: The lack of competencies related to pain has implications for advancing skillful and ethical practice. The lack of attention to pain competencies limits the capacity of health care professionals to alleviate suffering, foster autonomy and use resources justly. Influencing professional bodies to increase the number of required entry-to-practice pain competencies may ultimately have the greatest impact on education and practice. Pharmacotherapeutic management of chronic noncancer pain in primary care: lessons for pharmacists.
CONCLUSION: In primary care, patients' level of satisfaction with their pain treatment is not optimal. This study underlines how the expanded scope of practice of community pharmacists may allow them to play a pivotal role in providing information, discussing barriers to pain treatment, and monitoring pain disability, and by appropriately managing pharmacotherapy to optimize effectiveness while minimizing adverse effects. Beliefs and distress about orofacial pain: patient journey through a specialist pain consultation.
CONCLUSION: Patients' fears and beliefs about chronic orofacial pain are dominated by worrying and searching for meaning before consultation. Information about their chronic pain condition counters feelings of helplessness and supports sense-making around pain when explanations are clear, are delivered sensitively from a trusted source, and take into account the patient's existing health beliefs; this promotes self-management. These findings underline the important functions of specialist consultation in achieving a shared accurate understanding of pain and options for treatment. A survey on teaching ultrasound-guided chronic pain procedures in pain medicine fellowship programs.
CONCLUSION: The teaching of ultrasound guided chronic pain procedures varies significantly between individual programs. Though many program directors do require that fellows demonstrate competency in the technique before graduation, as of today there is no ACGME guideline regarding this. The advancement in ultrasound technology and the increase in number of trained faculty may significantly impact the use of USG in training fellows to perform chronic pain procedures. Obesity and Chronic Pain: Systematic Review of Prevalence and Implications for Pain Practice.
This article examines specific pain management approaches for obese patients and reviews novel interventional techniques for treatment of obesity. The infrastructure for simultaneous treatment of obesity and pain already exists in pain medicine (eg, patient education, behavioral medicine approaches, physical rehabilitation, medications, and interventional treatment). Screening for obesity, pain-related disability, and behavioral disorders as well as monitoring of functional performance should become routine in pain medicine practices. Such an approach requires additional physician and staff training. Further research shoul...

A Multivariable Prediction Model for the Chronification of Non-traumatic Shoulder Pain: A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSION: This systematic review found evidence that high scores on the SPADI questionnaire, more shoulder pain, and a longer duration of complaints are associated with chronification of shoulder pain. In order to reduce chronification, clinicians can use the International Classification of Functioning based model presented here that could aid their decision-making.
