Drug Coated Balloons for Dysfunctional Haemodialysis Venous Access: A Patient Level Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials
CONCLUSION: Overall evidence suggests that DCB is favoured over PTA in TLPP and ACPP.PMID:34362627 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2021.06.006

The frail world of haemodialysis patients in the COVID-19 pandemic era: a systematic scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic scoping review provides an overview of the current knowledge on the impact of COVID-19 on the frail world of HD patients. Furthermore, it may help to implement the existing strategies of COVID-19 prevention and provide a list of unmet needs (safe transport, testing, shelter). Finally, it may be a stimulus for performing systematic reviews and meta-analyses which will form the basis for evidence-based guidelines.PMID:34417996 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-021-01136-5

Paclitaxel Coated Balloon Angioplasty vs. Plain Balloon Angioplasty for Haemodialysis Arteriovenous Access Stenosis: A Systematic Review and a Time to Event Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials
CONCLUSION: Paclitaxel coated DCBs reduced the risk of loss of target lesion patency and circuit patency in arteriovenous access stenosis compared with PBs. Considering the heterogeneity of the included trials, there is a need to investigate optimal treatment regimens regarding drug dose and agent of the DCB and the treatment procedure.PMID:34420890 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2021.05.043

Impact of arteriovenous fistulas versus arteriovenous grafts on vascular access performance in haemodialysis patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis of best available comparative evidence (Level 2) demonstrated that AVFs may be associated with significantly higher primary failure rate but higher primary patency, primary-assisted patency and secondary patency at 1, 2 and 5 years compared to AVGs. However, the available evidence is subject to significant selection bias and confounding by indication.PMID:34461784 | DOI:10.1177/17085381211041473

Towards an individualized determination of dialysis adequacy: a narrative review with special emphasis on incremental hemodialysis
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2021 Oct 1. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2021.1987216. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The search for the "perfect" renal replacement therapy has been paralleled by the search for the perfect biomarkers for assessing dialysis adequacy. Three main families of markers have been assessed: small molecules (prototype: urea); middle molecules (prototype β2-microglobulin); comprehensive and nutritional markers (prototype of the simplified assessment, albumin levels; composite indexes as malnutrition-inflammation score). After an era of standardization of dialysis treatment, personalized dialysis schedu...

Measuring quality of life in trials including patients on dialysis: how are transplants and mortality incorporated into the analysis? A systematic review protocol
Introduction It is estimated that 25 000 people in the UK receive dialysis. Dialysis is an intrusive and time-consuming intervention that causes significant reductions in quality of life. When enrolled in a clinical trial, often some patients drop out of the study either because they die, receive a kidney transplant or are lost to follow-up for other reasons. It is unclear how these events are dealt with when analysing quality of life measures within clinical trials. This review will assess current practice for dealing with loss to follow-up in trials including patients on haemodialysis. The methods currently used will be ...

Salivary changes in chronic kidney disease and in patients undergoing hemodialysis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Chronic kidney disease patients present reduced salivary flow rate and increased pH and phosphorus concentration in saliva. Hemodialysis can increase the salivary flow rate of these patients.PMID:35235185 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-022-01274-4
