Transversus Abdominis Plane Block for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Abdominal Wall Pain Following Surgery: A Case Series.
CONCLUSIONS: TAP blocks are a valuable addition to the diagnostic armamentarium of pain physicians confronted with abdominal pain of unclear origin. Although most patients responded to the LA injection, the varying degrees of response duration may have been influenced by the different etiologies underlying each condition and the variable expressions of placebo responses. Once the abdominal wall and/or its nerves are identified as pain generators, the optimal therapeutic management remains to be determined. Available literature as well as our case series show that long-term benefit may be obtained with 1 or more injections,...

Developing a Sense of Knowing and Acquiring the Skills to Manage Pain in Children with Profound Cognitive Impairments: Mothers' Perspectives.
Abstract Children with profound cognitive impairment (PCI) are a heterogenous group who often experience frequent and persistent pain. Those people closest to the child are key to assessing their pain. This mixed method study aimed to explore how parents acquire knowledge and skills in assessing and managing their child's pain. Eight mothers completed a weekly pain diary and were interviewed at weeks 1 and 8. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis and the quantitative data using descriptive statistics. Mothers talked of learning through a system of trial and error ("learning to get on with it"); th...

School Anxiety in Children and Adolescents with Chronic Pain.
This article reviews the cooccurrence of pediatric chronic pain and anxiety, identifies unique sources of heightened school anxiety among youth with chronic pain, and describes current approaches for assessing anxiety in pediatric pain settings. Highlighted by this review is the absence of a comprehensive evidence-based approach for assessing school anxiety in pediatric chronic pain. Given the psychometric limitations inherent to gathering data from a single source, recommendations for advancing measurement methods are provided. Novel approaches may be needed to shed more light on the way in which school anxiety is experie...

State of education regarding ultrasound-guided interventions during pain fellowships in Korea: a survey of recent fellows.
Conclusions: Instruction regarding US-guided pain management interventions varied among fellowship training hospitals, highlighting the need for the development of educational standards that mandate a minimum number of US-guided nerve blocks or injections during fellowships in interventional pain management. Early Factors Associated with the Development of Chronic Pain in Trauma Patients.
Conclusions: We identified risk factors present on hospital admission that can predict trauma patients who will develop chronic pain. These factors should be prospectively validated. PMID: 29666666 [PubMed - in process]

A Comparative Study between Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and Fentanyl to Relieve Shoulder Pain during Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery under Spinal Anesthesia: A Randomized Clinical Trail.
Conclusions: The findings indicated that TENS was not superior to fentanyl for pain relief in laparoscopic surgery. It seems that the correct use of TENS parameters might merit further investigation. This trial is registered with: IRCT2016031216765N3. PMID: 29743962 [PubMed - in process]

Changes in Pain Perception following Psychotherapy: The Mediating Role of Psychological Components.
Abstract Chronic pain is frequently associated with significant psychological issues, such as depression or anxiety. Psychological treatments, such as psychotherapy, can often alleviate both psychological and pain symptoms. However, there is limited research about the association between psychological symptoms and perceived pain in the context of psychotherapeutic interventions. We conducted a retrospective study that analyzed, in a hospital context, how changes in psychological functioning and well-being were associated with pain reduction. Thirty-seven records of patients with chronic pain attending psychotherap...

The Role of Nurses' Uncertainty in Decision-Making Process of Pain Management in People with Dementia.
Authors: Rababa M Abstract Pain in people with dementia (PWD) is underassessed and undertreated. Treatment of pain in people with dementia goes awry because of poor assessment, poor treatment, and factors related to nursing decision-making skills. Several theoretical models addressed the role of nurses' critical thinking and decision-making skills in pain treatment, like the cognitive continuum theory (CCT) and the adaptive pain management (APT). Only the Response to Certainty of Pain (RCP) model was the first model to posit relationships between nurses' uncertainty, pain assessment, and patient outcomes. Gilmore-B...
