Use of propensity score matching to create counterfactual group to assess potential HIV prevention interventions
Sci Rep. 2021 Mar 29;11(1):7017. doi: 10.1038/s41598-021-86539-x.ABSTRACTThe design of HIV prevention trials in the context of effective HIV preventive methods is a challenge. Alternate designs, including using non-randomised 'observational control arms' have been proposed. We used HIV simulated vaccine efficacy trials (SiVETs) to show pitfalls that may arise from using such observational controls and suggest how to conduct the analysis in the face of the pitfalls. Two SiVETs were nested within previously established observational cohorts of fisherfolk (FF) and female sex workers (FSW) in Uganda. SiVET participants receive...

HIV/Aids and COVID-19 in Brazil: in four decades, two antithetical approaches to face serious pandemics
Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz. 2021 Jun 21;116:e210071. doi: 10.1590/0074-02760210071. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTIn the space of four decades, Brazil has faced two serious pandemics: human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The country's response to HIV/AIDS was coordinated by several stakeholders and recognised the importance of scientific evidence in guiding decision-making, and a network offering monitoring and antiretroviral treatment was provided through coordinated efforts by the country's universal health system. Conversely, the lack of a centrally co...

HIV-exposed infants with EBV infection have a reduced persistence of the immune response to the HBV vaccine
CONCLUSIONS: We found a heterogeneous timing of acquisition of EBV with the majority of infants born from HIV + mothers acquiring infection after 6 months. Anti-HBs levels were lower and appeared to wane faster in infants acquiring EBV infection.PMID:34348748 | PMC:PMC8336389 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-021-00375-7

Messenger RNA-based Vaccines: Past, Present, and Future Directions in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Adv Drug Deliv Rev. 2021 Oct 9:114000. doi: 10.1016/j.addr.2021.114000. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTmRNA vaccines have received major attention in the fight against COVID-19. Formulations from companies such as Moderna and BioNTech/Pfizer have allowed us to slowly ease the social distancing measures, mask requirements, and lockdowns that have been prevalent since early 2020. This past year's focused work on mRNA vaccines has catapulted this technology to the forefront of public awareness and additional research pursuits, thus leading to new potential for bionanotechnology principles to help drive further innovation using...
