Relevance of vitamin D in patients undergoing HLA matched allogeneic stem cell transplant for acute leukemia
CONCLUSION: The incidence of vitamin D deficiency was high in our patient cohort. Patients who were vitamin D deficient at the time of transplant did not have inferior outcomes, suggesting a limited role of vitamin D in influencing transplant outcomes.PMID:37648032 | DOI:10.1016/j.trim.2023.101925

Gut-derived metabolites mediating cognitive development in 5-year-old children: early-life transplant in mice has lasting effects throughout adulthood
Brain Behav Immun. 2023 Aug 7:S0889-1591(23)00232-5. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2023.08.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe gut microbiota has been causally linked to cognitive development. We aimed to identify metabolites mediating its effect on cognitive development, and foods or nutrients related to most promising metabolites. Faeces from 5-year-old children (DORIAN-PISAC cohort, including 90 general population families with infants, 42/48 females/males, born in 2011-2014) were transplanted (FMT) into C57BL/6 germ-free mice. Children and recipient mice were stratified by cognitive phenotype, or based on protective metabolite...

Evaluation of Vitamin D Levels in Children With Liver Transplant
CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in pediatric chronic liver disease before and after transplant, especially for cholestatic liver diseases. However, no association between vitamin D levels and liver graft rejection or patient survival was noted. We recommend close monitoring and individualized vitamin D supplementation before and after liver transplant.PMID:37486032 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2023.0075

Bone turnover profile and muscular status in major orthopaedic surgery: a case series
CONCLUSIONS The fact that in our sample sarcopenia is unilateral affecting only the pathological limb, that it is frequently associated with osteoporosis which is also unilateral and that for the most part it is not associated with vitamin D deficiency, suggests that it is an independent condition, with etiopathogenetic mechanisms different from osteosarcopenia itself. In major orthopedic surgery, bone integration and muscle status are both essential for achieving and lasting positive results. Considering the high incidence of district osteosarcopenia, an integrated surgical, pharmacological, and rehabilitative approach is...
