In Other Words: What ’s It Mean to Be Organic?
The word organic is often used to talk about fruits and vegetables that have been produced in a specific way, typically without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. But to chemists, organic refers to carbon-containing compounds that are the basis for all living organisms. Ironically, the chemicals prohibited in the farming of organic produce are usually organic molecules. Credit: NIGMS. Organic chemists study, create, and explore carbon-containing molecules. Most organic molecules contain carbon and hydrogen, but they can also include other elements like nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and more. Organic comp...

Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) For High Blood Pressure: Types, Side Effects, Drug Interactions
Conclusion Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has become a leading cause of death globally, necessitating the adoption of preventive measures, early detection, and effective management strategies. Hypertension, a significant risk factor for CVD, requires active management to mitigate associated risks. Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) have emerged as a favored choice among healthcare professionals due to their effectiveness and unique benefits. ARBs offer several advantages compared to other blood pressure medications. They effectively control blood pressure, protect vital organs such as the heart and kidneys, ...

A 60 year old with chest pain
:what do you think? The medics came to me worried about hyperacute T-waves.  But these are not HATW and I immediately said so.  Why?The ST segment is too flat, resulting in a narrow base for the T-wave even though the QT interval is quite long (QTc Hodges = 464 and a lot longer by Bazett).  T-wave hyperacuteness is due to area under the curve, which is height + width + straightness of the ST segment.  The width of the T-wave is not determined only by the QT interval!  It is also determined by the ST segment itself.  A patient with hypocalcemia has a long ST segment and thus long QT, but no...

Inpatient Management of Decompensated Cirrhosis
In this clinical-pearl-packed session, Dr. Suchita Shah Sata from Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., recaps the breadth of knowledge needed by hospitalists to manage this complex patient population. Outlining the objectives of the talk, Dr. Sata describes the pathophysiology of cirrhosis and how this leads to the complications that are seen in the decompensated state, suggests a framework for evaluating the etiologies of decompensated cirrhosis, and applies current evidence to delineate best practices in inpatient management of common complications of cirrhosis. Reviewing the pathophysiology of decompensated cirrhos...

Future targets for migraine treatment beyond CGRP
ConclusionWhile current research on these non-CGRP drug targets has not yet led to the development of efficacious therapies, human provocation studies using these targets have provided valuable insight into underlying mechanisms of migraine headaches and auras. Further studies are needed on these alternative therapies in non-responders of CGRP(-receptor) targeted therapies with the ultimate aim to pave the way towards a headache-free future for all migraine patients.

Pregabalin can interact synergistically with Kv7 channel openers to exert antinociception in mice
Eur J Pharmacol. 2023 Jun 21:175870. doi: 10.1016/j.ejphar.2023.175870. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic pain is a common public health problem and remains an unmet medical need. Currently available analgesics usually have limited efficacy for the treatment of chronic pain, including neuropathic pain and persistent inflammatory pain, or they are accompanied by many adverse side effects. The voltage-gated calcium channel blocker (pregabalin) and potassium channel openers (flupirtine and retigabine) have been widely used for the management of chronic pain, but their effectiveness in combination is unclear. In this resea...
