The acrimonious debate over the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic flared up again this week with a report from an expert panel concluding that SARS-CoV-2 likely spread naturally in a zoonotic jump from an animal to humans—without help from a lab. “Our paper recognizes that there are different possible origins, but the evidence towards zoonosis is overwhelming,” says co-author Danielle Anderson, a virologist at the University of Melbourne. The report, which includes an analysis that found the peer-reviewed literature overwhelmingly supports the zoonotic hypotheses, appeared in the Proceedings of the Nationa...

Ketogenic Diets for Diabetes and Obesity
To the Editors Although Joshi and colleagues ’ Viewpoint on ketogenic diets for diabetes and obesity makes an important point that enthusiasm for these diets has outstripped evidence, I have 2 concerns. Some of the hype has occurred because there is evi dence that these diets can improve glycemic control in diabetes for a sustained period of time. Our own clinical trial showed statistically (and clinically) significant improvements in glycated hemoglobin levels at 12 months. We recognize, however, that larger trials with longer foll...

Can Liver and Diet Impact Alzheimer's Risk?
This research has a variety of interesting implications. For example, it highlights a potential relationship between conditions such as obesity and diabetes and Alzheimer ’s.ByAlzheimer's Reading RoomReduced levels of plasmalogens — a class of lipids created in the liver that are integral to cell membranes in the brain—are associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer ’s Disease, according to new research.Plasmalogens are created in the liver and are dispersed through the blood stream in the form of lipoproteins, which also transport cholesterol and other lipids to and from cells and tissues throughout the body, i...
