Equitable implementation of lung cancer screening: avoiding its potential to mirror existing inequities among people who use tobacco
CONCLUSION: The present commentary utilizes information about historical trends in tobacco use to highlight opportunities for targeted outreach efforts to engage communities at high risk with information about the lung cancer screening opportunity. Future efforts toward equitable implementation of lung cancer screening should focus on multi-level implementation strategies that engage and work in concert with community partners to co-create approaches that leverage strengths and reduce barriers within specific communities to achieve the potential of lung cancer screening.PMID:37713024 | DOI:10.1007/s10552-023-01790-z

Value of PET imaging in head and neck cancer
HNO. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01354-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe combination of positron-emission tomography (PET) with cross-sectional imaging in particular is becoming increasingly important in the diagnosis of head and neck tumors because, in addition to pure anatomy, the metabolic activity of tissue can be visualized and assessed. The combination of PET and computed tomography (CT) is already an established procedure in head and neck tumor patients in some indications, e.g., for primary tumor detection in cancer of unknown primary (CUP) syndrome or also after completed primary radio(chemo)therapy fo...

The potential impact of computed tomography coronary calcium score screening on patients with dyslipidemia
CONCLUSION: CAC scoring is associated with reduced risk of myocardial infarction and death in asymptomatic dyslipidemia patients and should be considered as a screening tool in these patients. The presumed mechanism for improved outcomes is that early identification of CAD results in earlier or more intensive treatment, reducing future cardiac event risk.PMID:37614860 | PMC:PMC10444005 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2023.2239083

Understanding Factors Associated with Uptake of Lung Cancer Screening among Individuals at High Risk
This study aimed to identify factors associated with the uptake of LCS in high-risk individuals. Data for this study were obtained from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n=11,297). Multivariable logistic regression models were used. Individuals with no health insurance (OR: 0.33, 95% CI: 0.19-0.58), no primary health care provider (OR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.25-0.64), no chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.28- 0.49), and racial/ethnic minorities other than Black and Hispanic (OR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.31-0.78) were less likely to participate in annual LCS. Low-dose computed tomography uptake varied ...
