Interventions for bronchiectasis: an overview of Cochrane systematic reviews.
CONCLUSIONS: This overview clearly points to significant opportunities for further research aimed at improving outcomes for people with bronchiectasis. We have highlighted important endpoints for studies (particularly exacerbations, quality of life and lung function), and areas of clinical practice that are in most urgent need of evidence-based support (including long-term antibiotics, ICSs and mucolytics). As the evidence is confined to small trials of short duration, it is not currently possible to assess the balance between the benefits and potential harms of treatments for bronchiectasis. Mason Type I Fractures of the Radial Head.
Abstract Mason type I fractures are the most common fractures of the radial head. The fractures have a benign character and often result in good, pain-free function. Nevertheless, up to 20% of patients with a Mason type I fracture report loss of extension and residual pain. Currently, there is a lack of consensus concerning diagnosis and treatment of these fractures. The goal of this study was to systematically review incidence, diagnosis, classification, treatment, and outcome of Mason type I radial head fractures in adults and establish an evidence-based treatment guideline. A search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and ...

Measurement Properties of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale: A Systematic Review.
Conclusion The results of this review support the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the LEFS scores for assessing functional impairment in a wide array of patient groups with lower extremity musculoskeletal conditions. Simulated Patients in Physical Therapy Education: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
CONCLUSION: SPs appear to have an effect comparable to alternative educational strategies on development of physical therapy clinical practice competencies, and a valuable role in entry-level physical therapy education. However, available research lacks the rigor required for confidence in findings. Given the potential advantages for students, high quality studies that include an economic analysis should be conducted. PMID: 26939603 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Back schools for acute and subacute non-specific low-back pain.
CONCLUSIONS: It is uncertain if back schools are effective for acute and subacute non-specific LBP as there is only very low quality evidence available. While large well-conducted studies will likely provide more conclusive findings, back schools are not widely used interventions for acute and subacute LBP and further research into this area may not be a priority. Measurement Properties of the Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale in Patients With Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSION: For research and clinical practice we advise to use the QBPDS with caution to measure disability in patients with non-specific low back pain. Strong evidence is lacking on all measurement properties for each language version of the QBPDS. PMID: 27231271 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Initial treatment of complete rotator cuff tear and transition to surgical treatment: systematic review of the evidence.
CONCLUSIONS: complete rotator cuff tears may be effectively treated with injections, exercise in the short and intermediate terms respectively. Negative effect of corticosteroids on rotator cuff tissue has not been demonstrated. Timing to end conservative treatment is unknown, but likely indicated when a patient demonstrates increased weakness and loss of function not recoverable by physiotherapy. PMID: 27331030 [PubMed]

Efficacy and safety of home-based exercises versus individualized supervised outpatient physical therapy programs after total knee arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion Short-term improvements in physical function and knee ROM do not clearly differ between outpatient physiotherapy and home-based exercise regimes in patients after primary TKA; however, this conclusion is based on a meta-analysis with high heterogeneity. Level of evidence I.

Injected corticosteroids for treating plantar heel pain in adults.
CONCLUSIONS: We found low quality evidence that local steroid injections compared with placebo or no treatment may slightly reduce heel pain up to one month but not subsequently. The available evidence for other outcomes of this comparison was very low quality. Where available, the evidence from comparisons of steroid injections with other interventions used to treat heel pain and of different methods of guiding the injection was also very low quality. Although serious adverse events relating to steroid injection were rare, these were under-reported and a higher risk cannot be ruled out.Further research should focus on est...

Lumbosacral Dorsal Rhizotomy for Spastic Cerebral Palsy: A Health Technology Assessment.
CONCLUSIONS: Lumbrosacral dorsal rhizotomy and physical therapy effectively reduces lower-limb spasticity in children with spastic cerebral palsy and significantly improves their gross motor function and functional independence. Major peri-operative complications were infrequently reported. Families reported perceived improvements with dorsal rhizotomy, and surgery and post-operative rehabilitation were intensive and demanding. PMID: 28757906 [PubMed - in process]

Knee Position during Surgical Wound Closure in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Review
J Knee Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0037-1608838Study areas concerning maximizing knee range of motion (ROM) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have come under focus by surgeons. Among the perioperative factors that were identified to affect ROM after TKAs is knee position during surgical wound closure. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review the impact of knee position during TKA wound closure on: (1) postoperative ROM, (2) wound-related complications, (3) Knee Society Score (KSS), (4) postoperative pain, and (5) muscle strength and home functional recovery. A literature search was performed using PubMed, Ovid, and Goo...

Compliance With Hand-Washing Guidelines Among Visitors From the Community to Acute Care Settings: A Scoping Review
Conclusions: Visitor compliance with hand hygiene guidelines is highly variable but may be amenable to public health interventions. Higher quality studies focused on health outcomes are necessary to generate best practice recommendations related to hand hygiene.
