Highlights from this issue
June Issue BJO Temporary monocular blindness is a risk factor for stroke and may need quick surgical therapy. The highest risk period for suffering a stroke after a temporary monocular blindness or amaurosis fugax is the first 14 days after the event, and this is the recommended threshold for performing carotid endarterectomy. Naylor and colleagues stress the importance of referring ophthalmological patients presenting with transient monocular blindness (or blindness felt to be "monocular") to stroke units for further diagnosis and therapy of a potential carotid artery stenosis.1 Purulent Conjunctivitis I Children In an in...

Interdisciplinary interaction for vascular diseases of the eye : Neurological differential diagnosis.
CONCLUSION: Vascular diseases of the eye are frequently associated with cerebrovascular disease. A comprehensive vascular evaluation can contribute to prevention of stroke. PMID: 24448810 [PubMed - in process]

Central retinal artery occlusion: a retrospective study of disease presentation, treatment, and outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients with CRAO presented to eye care providers, and few present within the potential window for thrombolysis of 4.5 hours, highlighting the need for public awareness strategies. Our cohort highlights the significant rate of systemic comorbidity that exists in these patients.PMID:35307340 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2022.02.015

An audit of management practices in patients with suspected temporary monocular blindness.
CONCLUSION: There is a need to improve professional awareness of the importance of starting best medical therapy and performing CEA as soon as possible after onset of TMB. PMID: 24187055 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

How urgent is the treatment of transient vision loss?
Amaurosis fugax, or transient monocular blindness (TMB) from an embolic phenomenon, represents an ophthalmic form of a cerebrovascular transient ischaemic attack (TIA), and it has been associated with an increased risk of hemispheric stroke. In this issue of the BJO, Naylor R et al1 describe the changes in physician behaviour after instituting a streamlined referral system for TMB patients to a TIA clinic, where optimal medical and rapid surgical treatment (where appropriate) were provided. They did not attempt to measure improved outcomes, taking them as a given based on their assessment of the recent literature, and they...
