Shared Decision-Making and Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2023 Aug 14. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001162. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTShared decision-making is increasingly embraced in health care and recommended in cardiovascular guidelines. Patient involvement in health care decisions, patient-clinician communication, and models of patient-centered care are critical to improve health outcomes and to promote equity, but formal models and evaluation in cardiovascular care are nascent. Shared decision-making promotes equity by involving clinicians and patients, sharing the best available evidence, and recognizing the needs, values, and experiences of individuals and...

Targeting oxidative stress as a preventive and therapeutic approach for cardiovascular disease
J Transl Med. 2023 Aug 2;21(1):519. doi: 10.1186/s12967-023-04361-7.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to exert a significant impact on global mortality rates, encompassing conditions like pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), atherosclerosis (AS), and myocardial infarction (MI). Oxidative stress (OS) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis and advancement of CVDs, highlighting its significance as a contributing factor. Maintaining an equilibrium between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant systems not only aids in mitigating oxidative stress but also confers protective benefits on cardiac health. H...

Hearing intervention versus health education control to reduce cognitive decline in older adults with hearing loss in the USA (ACHIEVE): a multicentre, randomised controlled trial
Lancet. 2023 Jul 17:S0140-6736(23)01406-X. doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(23)01406-X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Hearing loss is associated with increased cognitive decline and incident dementia in older adults. We aimed to investigate whether a hearing intervention could reduce cognitive decline in cognitively healthy older adults with hearing loss.METHODS: The ACHIEVE study is a multicentre, parallel-group, unmasked, randomised controlled trial of adults aged 70-84 years with untreated hearing loss and without substantial cognitive impairment that took place at four community study sites across the USA. Participa...

Dedifferentiation and Proliferation of Artery Endothelial Cells Drive Coronary Collateral Development in Mice
CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that adult artery endothelial cells fail to drive collateral artery development due to their limited ability to dedifferentiate and proliferate.PMID:37345524 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.319319

Tryptophan metabolism, gut microbiota, and carotid artery plaque in women with and without HIV infection
CONCLUSIONS: In a cohort of women living with and without HIV infection, plasma IPA levels and related gut bacteria were inversely associated with carotid artery plaque, suggesting a potential beneficial role of IPA and its gut bacterial producers in atherosclerosis and CVD.PMID:37199567 | DOI:10.1097/QAD.0000000000003596

Acute Outcomes of Cardiac Operations in Patients With Autoimmune Disorders: A National Analysis
DISCUSSION: Autoimmune connective tissue disease patients demonstrated acceptable outcomes following CABG and valve procedures. However, novel prophylactic care pathways should be developed and instituted to address greater thrombotic and blood transfusion risk. Further investigation is needed to identify factors contributing to greater non-elective readmissions among these patients.PMID:37170846 | DOI:10.1177/00031348231175484

Impact of a simple educational intervention on awareness regarding cardiovascular disease among school-going adolescents in a rural area of Bengaluru district, India
This study was conducted using a convenience sample of school-going adolescents of classes 8, 9, and 10 in three schools in a rural area of Anekal subdistrict, Bengaluru, with a sample size of 170. A standardized, validated questionnaire testing CVD awareness was administered, followed by a simple lecture with audio-visual aids on key aspects of CVD. Three weeks later, the same questionnaire was administered to the same students. The results were then analyzed using appropriate descriptive (mean, percentage) and inferential analyses (Chi-square, paired t-test).RESULTS: The mean (SD) age was 14.5 (1.0) years, and 54% (n = 1...
