Survey of blood collection and transfusion practices among institutions in Africa
This study highlights significant variability and restrictions in blood product availability, pre-transfusion testing, and blood donor infectious disease testing across Africa. Further studies are needed to ascertain barriers to improving blood donor availability, blood product safety, and infectious disease testing.PMID:37646070 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17501

Profile of patients with a positive HCV viral load in a large French psychiatric hospital (2019-2021): A case-control study
J Viral Hepat. 2023 Jul 23. doi: 10.1111/jvh.13875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatitis C virus (HCV) is highly prevalent in people with mental disorders (PWMDs). However, in the international context of HCV elimination, no previous study has explored the features of seropositive PWMDs with vs. without a positive viral load (VL). We retrospectively retrieved all HCV serology results of patients hospitalized in 2019, 2020 and 2021 in the second-largest psychiatric hospital of France. Using the medical records of all patients found seropositive for HCV, the following data were collected: sex (male, female), age (in years...

Distribution of HCV genotypes and HCV RNA viral load in hepatitis infected patients of Kolar region, Karnataka, India
Bioinformation. 2022 Apr 30;18(4):387-391. doi: 10.6026/97320630018387. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTDecisions and disease progression prediction, understanding the distribution of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype and its association with viral load is significant for treatment. Therefore, it is of interest to document the distribution pattern of HCV genotypes and their association with viral load among HCV infected patients in Kolar, Karnataka. Seventy-four HCV-positive patients and not on antiviral therapy were enrolled from R.L. Jalappa hospital in Kolar, Karnataka. Blood samples were taken and demographics were recorde...

Hepatitis C Virus Micro-Elimination Plan in Southern Italy: The "HCV ICEberg" Project
This study evaluates the feasibility of a local action program for HCV micro-elimination in highly endemic areas. Retrospective analysis: administrative and laboratory data (Local Health Unit, southern Italy) were integrated to quantize the anti-HCV-positive subjects not RNA tested and untreated HCV-infected subjects (2018-2022). Prospective analysis: all subjects admitted to a division of the LHU largest hospital (2021-2022) were tested for HCV, with linkage of active-infected patients to care. Overall, 49287 subjects were HCV-Ab tested: 1071 (2.2%) resulted positive without information for an HCV RNA test and 230 (0.5%) ...

Selection dynamics of HCV genotype 3 resistance-associated substitutions under direct-acting antiviral therapy pressure
Braz J Infect Dis. 2022 Nov 18:102717. doi: 10.1016/j.bjid.2022.102717. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe chronic hepatitis C (CHC) treatment is currently based on the use of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), and patients infected with hepatitis C virus genotype 3 (GT3) have emerged as a more difficult-to-cure population. The NS5A inhibitor daclatasvir (DCV) and sofosbuvir (SOF), an NS5B viral polymerase inhibitor, are among the drugs that compose more effective and safer treatment regimens. The virus genetic variability is related to resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) that adversely impact DAAs effectiveness. The a...
