A single-molecule RNA electrical biosensor for COVID-19
Biosens Bioelectron. 2023 Aug 23;239:115624. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2023.115624. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic shows a critical need for rapid, inexpensive, and ultrasensitive early detection methods based on biomarker analysis to reduce mortality rates by containing the spread of epidemics. This can be achieved through the electrical detection of nucleic acids at the single-molecule level. In particular, the scanning tunneling microscopic-assisted break junction (STM-BJ) method can be utilized to detect individual nucleic acid molecules with high specificity and sensitivity in liquid samples. Here, we d...

Predictors of Mortality among COVID-19 Patients Admitted to Intensive Care Units: A Single-Center Study in Tehran, Iran
CONCLUSION: The findings are consistent with and add to the currently existing international literature. The findings may be used to predict risk of mortality from COVID-19 and provide some guidance on potential treatments.PMID:37542399 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2022.106

Brain MRI segmentation of Zika-Exposed normocephalic infants shows smaller amygdala volumes
CONCLUSION: ZIKV-exposed infants exhibited smaller volumes in the amygdala, a brain region primarily involved in emotional and behavioral processing. This brain MRI finding may lead to poorer behavioral outcomes and warrants long-term monitoring of pediatric cases of infants with gestational exposure to Zika virus as well as other neurotropic viruses.PMID:37506075 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0289227

Accuracy and Precision of 3D Optical Imaging for Body Composition by Age, BMI, and Ethnicity
CONCLUSION: A single 3DO body composition model produced accurate and precise body composition estimates that can be used on diverse populations. However, adjustments to specific subgroups may be warranted to improve the accuracy in those that had significant differences.CLINICAL TRIALS NUMBER: Shape Up! Can Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Surgeons Help Address the Osteoporosis Epidemic?
CONCLUSION: We attribute the higher rates of fragility and periprosthetic fractures in those at high risk compared with those at low risk to an occult diagnosis of osteoporosis. Hip and knee arthroplasty surgeons can help reduce the incidence and burden of these osteoporosis-related complications by initiating screening and subsequently referring patients to bone health specialists for treatment. Future studies might investigate the proportion of osteoporosis in patients at high risk of having the condition, develop and evaluate practical bone health screening and treatment algorithms for hip and knee arthroplasty surgeons...

Spatiotemporal Epidemiology of the Gonorrhea Epidemic in Relation to Neighborhood-level Structural Factors in an Eastern Province of China, 2016-2020
CONCLUSIONS: The gonorrhea incidence rates in northern and central Zhejiang from 2016 to 2020 were higher than those in southern Zhejiang. An area of relatively higher risk for gonorrhea existed mainly in the urban districts of Hangzhou and some counties and districts of Jiaxing, Jinhua, and Shaoxing. In the future, the research team plans to focus on strengthening the prevention and control measures against gonorrhea in those areas.PMID:37347692
