Stratification of carotid atheromatous plaque using interpretable deep learning methods on B-mode ultrasound images
Annu Int Conf IEEE Eng Med Biol Soc. 2021 Nov;2021:3902-3905. doi: 10.1109/EMBC46164.2021.9630402.ABSTRACTCarotid atherosclerosis is the major cause of ischemic stroke resulting in significant rates of mortality and disability annually. Early diagnosis of such cases is of great importance, since it enables clinicians to apply a more effective treatment strategy. This paper introduces an interpretable classification approach of carotid ultrasound images for the risk assessment and stratification of patients with carotid atheromatous plaque. To address the highly imbalanced distribution of patients between the symptomatic an...

Automated deep learning-based paradigm for high-risk plaque detection in B-mode common carotid ultrasound scans: an asymptomatic Japanese cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The proposed study demonstrates a fast, accurate, and reliable solution for early detection and quantification of plaque lesions in common carotid artery ultrasound scans. The system runs on a test US image in < 1 second, proving overall performance to be clinically reliable.PMID:34825801 | DOI:10.23736/S0392-9590.21.04771-4

Tetralogy of Fallot in the nascent open-heart surgical era in a tertiary hospital in south-west Nigeria: lessons learnt
CONCLUSIONS: TOF is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Early and safe corrective surgery is desirable.PMID:34851355 | DOI:10.5830/CVJA-2021-048

Contemporary management of persistent atrial fibrillation
Learning objectives Develop a basic understanding of the underlying mechanisms of atrial fibrillation and classification of the disease. Review the main principles in contemporary management of atrial fibrillation with a focus on persistent atrial fibrillation. Discuss catheter ablation in the context of atrial fibrillation. Introduction Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a multisystemic disorder that is associated with an excess risk of stroke, heart failure and mortality.1 It remains the most common sustained arrhythmia and its significance should not be underestimated. Research focused on unveiling the mechanisms of AF began o...
