Mineral elements and adiposity-related consequences in adolescents with intellectual disabilities
CONCLUSION: The intellectual disability of moderate type (MID) was associated with abnormal changes in the levels of essential mineral elements and adipokines and increased levels of cellular oxidative stress. Thus, evaluating plasma mineral elements and adipokines levels could be a potential diagnostic parameter for diagnosing MID.PMID:37730529 | PMC:PMC10512604 | DOI:10.1186/s12860-023-00490-5

Medical education empowered by generative artificial intelligence large language models
Trends Mol Med. 2023 Sep 15:S1471-4914(23)00211-3. doi: 10.1016/j.molmed.2023.08.012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGenerative artificial intelligence (GAI) large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT, have become the world's fastest growing applications. Here, we provide useful strategies for educators in medical and health science (M&HS) to integrate GAI-LLMs into learning and teaching practice, ultimately enhancing students' digital capability.PMID:37718142 | DOI:10.1016/j.molmed.2023.08.012

The Association Between Bone Remodeling Markers, genes polymorphisms with Incidence of Osteopenia Among Young Saudi Female
In conclusion, the GG genotype of FDPS rs2297480 and the TT genotype of LRP5 rs3736228 was shown to be strongly associated with osteopenia in young Saudi females with low bone mineral density and SOST levels.PMID:37605583 | DOI:10.14715/cmb/2023.69.6.16

An interplay of Progesterone, Leukemia Inhibitor Factor and Interleukin-6 in the window of implantation; Impact on fertility
CONCLUSION: Elevated levels of Pt were found to increase the production of LIF in fertile females. However, infertile females with PCOs and Uex-IF exhibited deficient levels of Pt, supporting its role as a biomarker for successful implantation in infertile women. These females showed decreased levels of gonadotropins as well as reduced LH/FSH ratio and diminished secretion of receptivity marker LIF, in addition to reduced Pt secretion. This suggests that reduced gonadotropin levels contribute to a lower LH/FSH ratio, resulting in decreased Pt secretion and ultimately leading to low levels of LIF, thereby causing impaired i...

Beating heart cells: Using cultured cardiomyocytes to study cellular structure and contractility in laboratory exercises
Biochem Mol Biol Educ. 2023 Jul 24. doi: 10.1002/bmb.21770. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHeart muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, exhibit intrinsic contractility in vitro. We found that commercially-available mammalian cardiomyocytes serve as an excellent model system for studying the cytoskeleton and cellular contractility, fundamental topics in undergraduate cell and molecular biology courses. Embryonic rat cardiomyocytes were plated on cell culture dishes or glass coverslips and visualized using an inverted phase-contrast microscope. The cardiomyocytes began contracting within 1-2 days after plating and continued to cont...

An idea to explore: Engaging high school students in structure-function studies of bacterial sortase enzymes and inhibitors - A comprehensive computational experimental pipeline
Biochem Mol Biol Educ. 2023 Jul 18. doi: 10.1002/bmb.21769. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigh school science fairs provide an exceptional opportunity for students to gain experience with scientific research, and participation has positive outcomes with respect to chosen careers in the sciences. However, it can be challenging to engage high school students in university-level research outside of formal internship programs. Here, we describe an experimental pipeline for a computational structural biology project that engages high school students. Students are involved at every step of the investigation and utilize freely av...

Talin2 and KANK2 functionally interact to regulate microtubule dynamics, paclitaxel sensitivity and cell migration in the MDA-MB-435S melanoma cell line
CONCLUSION: We conclude that KANK2 functionally interacts with talin2 and that the mechanism of increased sensitivity to PTX involves changes in microtubule dynamics. These data elucidate a cell-type-specific role of talin2 and KANK2 isoforms and we propose that talin2 and KANK2 are therefore potential therapeutic targets for improved cancer therapy.PMID:37460977 | DOI:10.1186/s11658-023-00473-6

An educational visual resource to support understanding of liquid-liquid phase separation
Biochem Mol Biol Educ. 2023 Jul 14. doi: 10.1002/bmb.21766. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn collaboration with educators and researchers, we created an online resource called Phase Separation 101 to help undergraduate students understand the basics of liquid-liquid phase separation, an emerging and complex concept in cell biology for which visual resources are still scarce. This work presents the workflow and visual communication strategies that we followed to build scientifically accurate visualizations of dynamic processes.PMID:37449657 | DOI:10.1002/bmb.21766
