A Campylobacteriosis Outbreak Caused by One Asymptomatic Food Handler Carrier
Biomed Environ Sci. 2023 Aug 20;36(8):779-782. doi: 10.3967/bes2023.105.ABSTRACTIn August 2021, three students with diarrhea from the same school visited a local hospital in the S district of Beijing. An epidemic investigation showed that there were more students with diarrhea in the same school and they had one meal together. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from both patients with diarrhea and asymptomatic food handlers; however, the latter also carried Campylobacter coli. Phylogenomic analysis showed that there was a campylobacteriosis outbreak among the students, and the asymptomatic food handler may have been the sou...

A Call to Action to Address Well-Being Within Experiential Education
Am J Pharm Educ. 2023 Sep;87(9):100078. doi: 10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.100078. Epub 2023 May 9.ABSTRACTThere is a significant lack of literature exploring or describing pharmacy student well-being during experiential learning even though students spend 30% of their doctor of pharmacy curricula in this environment. Drawing on inspiration from literature describing well-being challenges and solutions for pharmacy residents and other health disciplines, this commentary explores the unique challenges of supporting pharmacy student well-being during experiential education. Approaches for interventions are described along with a call ...

Impact of a Neuropsychiatric Therapeutics Course and a Case-Based Course on Pharmacy Students' Mental Health Stigma
CONCLUSION: The decreases in OMS-HC and AQ-9 scores and increases in Recovery and Empowerment scores indicate reductions in mental health stigma. Stigma among students was overall reduced after the therapeutics course and this reduction was maintained after the case-based course.PMID:37714654 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.100125

Backward Design to Combat Curricular Expansion in a Large, Interdisciplinary, Team-Taught Course
CONCLUSION: Using backward design as a framework to intentionally evaluate didactic content volume and assessment alignment can address curricular expansion while maintaining student learning and decreasing student and instructor stress.PMID:37714652 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2022.12.009

An International Web-based Preceptor Development Program for Nigerian Pharmacists, A Pilot Study
CONCLUSION: An international web-based preceptor development program was successfully delivered to pharmacy educators across Nigeria and improved their knowledge and attitudes toward effective precepting. Expanding this program to include pharmacists throughout Nigeria as a continuing education resource can aid in preparing pharmacy educators in the nation to precept students in the new PharmD curricula and support international initiatives to promote pharmacy education and practice.PMID:37714651 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2022.12.004

Automated Analysis of Preceptor Comments: A Pilot Study Using Sentiment Analysis to Identify Potential Student Issues in Experiential Education
CONCLUSION: This sentiment analysis algorithm was accurate in capturing positive and negative comments corresponding to pharmacy student performance. Given the accuracy of this preliminary validation for flagging preceptor comments, there are numerous implications when considering the use of sentiment analysis in pharmacy education. Using a sentiment analysis program minimizes the number of qualitative preceptor comments needing review by experiential faculty, as this program can aid in identifying students at risk of progression issues.PMID:37714650 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.02.005

The Anesthesiology Physician-Scientist Pipeline: Current Status and Recommendations for Future Growth-An Initiative of the Anesthesia Research Council
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):728-742. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006520. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe limited number and diversity of resident physicians pursuing careers as physician-scientists in medicine has been a concern for many decades. The Anesthesia Research Council aimed to address the status of the anesthesiology physician-scientist pipeline, benchmarked against other medical specialties, and to develop strategic recommendations to sustain and expand the number and diversity of anesthesiology physician-scientists. The working group analyzed data from the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Nationa...
