HEAL Initiative: Research to Increase Implementation of Substance Use Preventive Services (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Optional)
Funding Opportunity RFA-DA-24-066 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The importance of prevention in combatting the opioid crisis is clear identifying and implementing effective strategies to prevent the onset of opioid misuse and use disorder and reducing the need to treat disorders yields positive individual, societal, and financial benefits. In 2020, 9.5 million people aged 12 or older misused opioids in the past year (NSDUH, 2021), suggesting that there are millions of people whose trajectories could have been changed, had they been exposed to an effective prevention strategy. Currently funded HEAL studies a...

Sleep Spindle Generation Before and After Epilepsy Surgery: A Source Imaging Study in Children with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy
CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate alterations in the EEG slow spindles after resective epilepsy surgery. Fast spindle generation on the contrary did not change after surgery. Although the study is limited by its retrospective nature, lack of healthy controls, and reduced cortical spatial sampling, our findings suggest a spatial relationship between the slow spindles and the epileptogenic generators.PMID:37737957 | DOI:10.1007/s10548-023-01007-1

Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs) in Human Cancers for Years 2024, 2025, and 2026 (P50 Clinical Trial Required)
Funding Opportunity PAR-23-284 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. Through this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for P50 Research Center Grants for Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE). The program will fund P50 SPORE grants to support state-of-the-art investigator-initiated translational research that will contribute to improved prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of an organ-specific cancer or a highly related group of cancers. For the purpose of this FOA, a group of highly related cancers are those that are derived...

Does it work and can we do it? Hybrid research that answers both questions.
Families, Systems, & Health, Vol 41(3), Sep 2023, 291-296; doi:10.1037/fsh0000837The perceived disconnect between research and clinic contexts may thus result in frontline clinicians and administrators questioning the approachability and applicability of science to their day-to-day work with patients and families in integrated care. Science grinds along so painstakingly slowly that even within the research community, some thought leaders have called for a moratorium on RCTs in favor of approaches that will yield more immediate public health impact (Kessler & Glasgow, 2011). The aim of this editorial is to describe a both/a...

Donor white blood cell differential is by a wide margin the single largest determinant of whole blood gene expression patterns
Genomics. 2023 Sep 18:110708. doi: 10.1016/j.ygeno.2023.110708. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIt has become widely accepted that sample cellular composition is a significant determinant of the gene expression patterns observed in any transcriptomic experiment performed with bulk tissue. Despite this, many investigations currently performed with whole blood do not experimentally account for possible inter-specimen differences in cellularity, and often assume that any observed gene expression differences are a result of true differences in nuclear transcription. In order to determine how confounding of an assumption this may...
