Psychological factors and DNA methylation of genes related to immune/inflammatory system markers: the VA Normative Aging Study
Conclusions These findings suggest that positive and negative psychological factors affect DNA methylation of selected genes involved in chronic immune/inflammatory processes and inflammation-related endothelial dysfunction. Such epigenetic changes may represent biological pathways that mediate the effects of psychological factors on CHD.

How to prevent diabetes from sneaking up on your patients
An AMA Viewpoints post by AMA Board Chair Stephen R. Permut, MD A major health threat has been silently taking hold of 86 million Americans, with 90 percent of them unaware of it. A new public health campaign is about to change that—and you’re the key to helping these patients take their health back. A campaign to prevent type 2 diabetes If you’re not already talking to your patients about prediabetes and the risks associated with it, it’s time to start. People with prediabetes—more than 1 in 3 adults—are at higher risk of developing serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and s...

Cohort profile: the Finnish Medication and Alzheimer's disease (MEDALZ) study
Purpose The aim of the Medicine use and Alzheimer's disease (MEDALZ) study is to investigate the changes in medication and healthcare service use among persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medications in this group. This is important, because the number of persons with AD is rapidly growing and even though they are a particularly vulnerable patient group, the number of representative, large-scale studies with adequate follow-up time is limited. Participants MEDALZ contains all residents of Finland who received a clinically verified diagnosis of AD between 2005 and 2011 and ...

Disability in Singapore's Elderly Population.
CONCLUSION: The findings highlighted specific factors associated with disability in this multiethnic population. The identification of these factors would lead the way to the development of appropriate interventions. PMID: 27523509 [PubMed - in process]

Population-level interventions in government jurisdictions for dietary sodium reduction.
CONCLUSIONS: Population-level interventions in government jurisdictions for dietary sodium reduction have the potential to result in population-wide reductions in salt intake from pre-intervention to post-intervention, particularly if they are multi-component (more than one intervention activity) and incorporate intervention activities of a structural nature (e.g. food product reformulation), and particularly amongst men. Heterogeneity across studies was significant, reflecting different contexts (population and setting) and initiative characteristics. Implementation of future initiatives should embed more effective means ...

Investigation of social, demographic and health variations in the usage of prescribed and over-the-counter medicines within a large cohort (South Yorkshire, UK)
Conclusions Our study addresses a dearth of evidence to provide new insights into how behaviours in medicine usage vary by demographic, social and health-related factors. Differences in over-the-counter medicine usage by educational attainment may help our understanding of the determinants of health inequalities.

Ideal cardiovascular health score and incident end-stage renal disease in a community-based longitudinal cohort study: the Kailuan Study
Conclusions A low CVH score significantly increased the risk of incident ESRD. Risk factors for cardiovascular events may also be associated with an increased risk for kidney failure.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Caregiver Dependence among Older Adults in a Southeast Asian Population.
CONCLUSION: Various sociodemographic and health-related conditions were significantly associated with caregiver dependence. Dependent older adults will put greater demands on health and social services, resulting in greater healthcare expenditures. Hence, effective planning, services and support are crucial to meet the needs of dependent older adults and their caregivers. PMID: 27922142 [PubMed - in process]

More to science: working in Business Management
What is your scientific background? I was conferred my PhD in Neuroscience from the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience (IPN). I studied central nervous system trauma in rodent models of contusive spinal cord injury. Judy Lytle My thesis centered on a specific type of progenitor cell, and its role in post-injury adult spinal cord tissue. I worked to characterize this cell population’s proliferative capabilities after injury, its ability to become neural cells in the post-injury environment, and tested various growth factors to attempt to recapitulate the cell populationâ€...

Viewpoint Stroke prevention in recent guidelines for the management of patients with atrial fibrillation: An appraisal
Formal guidelines play an important role in disseminating the best available evidence knowledge and are expected to provide simple and practical recommendations for the most optimal management of patients with various conditions. Such guidelines have important implications for many disease states, which thereby could be more professionally managed in everyday clinical practice by clinicians with divergent educational backgrounds, and also more easily implemented in wards or outpatient clinics eliminating inequalities in health care management.
