Conception and Preliminary Evaluation of a Rehabilitation-Attending Counseling Service for Caregivers of Stroke Patients.
Abstract This paper presents the pilot project "The Caregivers' Guide", which is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project's concept is outreach-oriented and personal, giving constant support to relatives of stroke patients throughout rehabilitation. Its effects were reviewed in an accompanying study. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was chosen to gather data on the experiences and assessments of the caregivers, as well as changes during the counselling process. 62 caregivers completed questionnaires before and after the intervention. Additionally, 3...

Community-Based Rehabilitation to Improve Stroke Survivors’ Rehabilitation Participation and Functional Recovery
This study followed a quasi-experimental design. In each of 5 centers servicing approximately 50,000 individuals, 2 communities were designated as either the intervention or control community. A CRAT intervention program, including 2-year rehabilitation education and 3-month CRAT treatment, was regularly implemented in the intervention communities, whereas there was no special intervention in the control community. Two sampling surveys, at baseline and after intervention, were administered to evaluate the rehabilitation activity undertaken. In intervention communities, stroke survivor’s motor function, daily activity, an...

Therapeutic patient education and post-stroke cognitive-behavioral disorders: Inputs for patients, caregivers and professionals in rehabilitation units
Discussion – conclusion Participation and satisfaction rates for patients and caregivers show that TEP has met their expectations. A clear positioning is defined for the caregiver, target of TEP on CBD. Measured burden is low, but Zarit scale may reduce the objective component of burden. Awareness of CBD and decrease in anosognosia may explain the lack of improvement in the quality of life measured by EuroQol. TEP approach has changed professionals practice through their positioning in the patient-professional and caregiver-professional relationship and their collaboration between professionals. Our ultimate goal is to w...

Unilateral Strength Training and Mirror Therapy in Patients With Chronic Stroke: A Pilot Randomized Trial
Conclusions This pilot trial established the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial comparing mirror-aided cross-education with cross-education alone for poststroke upper limb recovery. Mirror therapy did not augment cross-education when training isometrically. However, results indicate that the combination of interventions should be investigated further applying an altered training protocol.

GETCare: Development of a Comprehensive Education and Training Program For Care-Partners Post-Stroke
Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States, with spousal partners often filling a significant role as caregivers after loved ones return home. Without adequate resources, this new role can lead to increased burden and depression for care-partners, and decreased rehabilitation effectiveness for stroke survivors. Research suggests the quality and amount of education provided to care-partners is severely lacking and there is need for improved services and resources. The purpose of this project was to conduct a needs assessment, create the GETCare program, and gather stakeholder feedback in prepar...

Do social determinants influence post-stroke aphasia outcomes? A scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: Research on SDOHs and aphasia outcomes is in its infancy. Telerehabilitation Following Stroke
Stroke remains a major cause of disability. Intensive rehabilitation therapy can improve outcomes, but most patients receive limited doses. Telehealth methods can overcome obstacles to delivering intensive therapy and thereby address this unmet need. A specific example is reviewed in detail, focused on a telerehabilitation system that targets upper extremity motor deficits after stroke. Strengths of this system include provision of daily therapy associated with very high patient compliance, safety and feasibility in the inpatient or home setting, comparable efficacy to dose-matched therapy provided in-clinic, and a holisti...
