Risk factors for osteoporosis among postmenopausal women in a Nigerian teaching hospital
CONCLUSION: We recommend regular bone mineral density screening of postmenopausal women at the primary care level for early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis to prevent fragility fractures.PMID:37636158 | PMC:PMC10451596 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2193_21

A common 18F-FDG PET radiomic signature to predict survival in patients with HPV-induced cancers
Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2023 Aug 26. doi: 10.1007/s00259-023-06320-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLocally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) and anal and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC and OPSCC) are mostly caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV). In this paper, we developed machine learning (ML) models based on clinical, biological, and radiomic features extracted from pre-treatment fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]-FDG PET) images to predict the survival of patients with HPV-induced cancers. For this purpose, cohorts from five institutions were used: two cohorts o...

Radiologic Features of T10 Paravertebral Muscle Sarcopenia: Prognostic Factors in COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: Easy to obtain and accurately calculated, radiologic features can provide a reliable alternative to laboratory methods for predicting survival in COVID-19. Thoracic muscles' CSA measurement in the level of the T10 vertebra, an acclaimed prognostic imaging assessment that relates directly to CT-SS and inflammatory markers in COVID-19 pneumonia, is a fairly specific tool for survival prognosis.PMID:37575354 | PMC:PMC10416190 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4963

Improving diagnosis of pulmonary mucormycosis: leads from a contemporary national study of 114 cases
Chest. 2023 Jul 5:S0012-3692(23)00946-7. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.06.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) is a life-threatening invasive mold infection. Diagnosis of mucormycosis is challenging and often delayed, resulting in higher mortality.RESEARCH QUESTION: Are the disease presentation of PM and contribution of diagnosis tools influenced by the patient underlying condition?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: All PM cases from six French teaching hospitals between 2008 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases were defined according to updated EORTC/MSG criteria with the addition of diab...

Improving Medication Safety in an ICU
Am J Nurs. 2023 Jul 1;123(7):39-45. doi: 10.1097/01.NAJ.0000944924.15137.c8.ABSTRACTReported medication errors in an ICU at an academic teaching hospital raised concerns about adherence to safety protocols, including barcode scanning before medication administration. A group of nurse leaders, bedside nurses, and pharmacists formed a medication safety task force to increase compliance with barcode scanning and reduce reported medication errors in which failure to scan was a contributing factor.Three task force members observed nurses' workflow in ICU medication administration. The members observed three nurses administer me...
