Heavy metals in ENDS: a comparison of open versus closed systems purchased from the USA, England, Canada and Australia
CONCLUSION: The presence of heavy metals only in closed-system products suggests that metals may be leaching from ENDS device parts. Highly variable heavy metal concentrations between ENDS products demonstrate that various product characteristics may affect the degree of leaching and that there is a need for further regulation of these products.PMID:37438094 | DOI:10.1136/tc-2023-057932

Youth patterns of use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) waves 4-5.5
CONCLUSIONS: PATH results show similar trends to other US national surveys in youth ENDS trends. The removal of non-tobacco, non-menthol flavors in pod-based ENDS (while remaining available in disposables) has likely driven youth towards disposable devices, resulting in continued high use of fruit/sweet/other flavors, which are now predominant in users of disposable ENDS. Wave 5.5 is uninformative regarding brand use because common disposable brands were not queried.PMID:37356317 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107783

Flavoured and nicotine-containing e-liquids impair homeostatic properties of an alveolar-capillary cell model
Food Chem Toxicol. 2023 Feb 7:113650. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2023.113650. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMost people consider that electronic cigarettes are safer than tobacco and are marketed as quit-smoking products. The e-liquid, which usually contains propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) in different ratios, nicotine and a wide variety of flavours, is heated by a coil and the aerosol droplets are primarily delivered to the alveolar area where nicotine and other molecules cross the alveolar-capillary barrier (ACB). However, e-cigarettes effects on the ACB are not yet established. In our study, a well-characteris...

Use, marketing, and appeal of oral nicotine products among adolescents, young adults, and adults
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a foundation for estimating use, behaviors, flavors, and marketing influence of oral nicotine products in the US and globally. Adolescent and young adult use of oral nicotine products and likelihood of buying products when exposed to marketing highlights the need for expanded tobacco use surveillance, marketing regulations, and counter marketing and educational efforts.PMID:36731224 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107632

E-cigarette and tobacco product use among NYS youth before and after a state-wide vaping flavour restriction policy, 2020-2021
CONCLUSIONS: Nearly all NYS youth continued to vape flavours that were restricted in NYS. While youth past 30-day vaping prevalence decreased significantly from 2020 to 2021, increased flavour restriction compliance could result in an even greater decrease. Continuous monitoring is important to better understand perceptions, use patterns and access at the individual level, retail level and population level to inform future enforcement and restrictions.PMID:36328470 | DOI:10.1136/tobaccocontrol-2022-057450

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) flavours and devices used by adults before and after the 2020 US FDA ENDS enforcement priority: findings from the 2018 and 2020 US ITC Smoking and Vaping Surveys
CONCLUSIONS: Between 2018 and the early phase of the FDA's 2020 enforcement priority, prevalence of menthol/mint and fruit/other-flavoured cartridges increased among adults. Half of vapers using cartridge flavours covered in the enforcement switched to other flavours and/or devices that were exempt, with the exception of disposables. The extent to which more comprehensive restrictions may be problematic for adults who prefer a range of ENDS flavours remains uncertain.PMID:36328466 | DOI:10.1136/tobaccocontrol-2022-057445

Can former conservation ‘pirates’ help scientists study the oceans?
Laura Sánchez Alòs had been at sea for less than 20 minutes when the motorboats attacked. In late January 2019, the 24-year-old Spanish conservation biologist was on board the Farley Mowat , a former U.S. Coast Guard cutter, in Mexican waters in the northern Gulf of California. She was the ship’s scientist, part of a campaign by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to study and protect the vaquita , the world’s smallest porpoise and most endangered marine mammal. Since 2015, the organization had been patrolling this region—and making local fishers increasingly angry. Sánchez Alòs was here t...

Factors associated with changes in flavored tobacco products used: Findings from wave 2 and wave 3 (2014-2016) of the population assessment of tobacco and health (PATH) study
CONCLUSIONS: Flavored tobacco product use is prevalent across non-cigarette tobacco products. Stability in the number of flavors used, as well as specific flavors, is higher among adult tobacco users, while the use of multiple flavors, and change in specific flavor, is more prevalent among youth tobacco users. Additional longitudinal research can further examine the role flavors play in appeal, product trial, and switching.PMID:35220150 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2022.107290

Perceived risk factors for severe Covid-19 symptoms and their association with health behaviours: Findings from the HEBECO study
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2021 Dec 3;222:103458. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2021.103458. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRisk perceptions are important influences on health behaviours. We used descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression models to assess cross-sectionally risk perceptions for severe Covid-19 symptoms and their health behaviour correlates among 2206 UK adults from the HEBECO study. The great majority (89-99%) classified age 70+, having comorbidities, being a key worker, overweight, and from an ethnic minority as increasing the risk. People were less sure about alcohol drinking, vaping, and nicotine repl...
