Simultaneous degradation of contaminants of emerging concern and disinfection by solar photoelectro-Fenton process at circumneutral pH in a solar electrochemical raceway pond reactor
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 1:139978. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139978. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSimultaneous contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) removal and wild microorganisms' inactivation was evaluated by applying solar photoelectro-Fenton (SPEF) process in actual secondary effluent collected from a real municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP). 20 L of a mixture of four CECs was used as model pollutants (200 μg/L of acetaminophen, caffeine, sulfamethazine, and sulfamethoxazole each one). The SPEF process was carried out on fully sunny days, at circumneutral pH using the complex Fe3+-EDDS, in a solar elec...

Solar photo-Fenton optimization at neutral pH for microcontaminant removal at pilot plant scale
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 11. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28988-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe increasing occurrence of micropollutants in natural water bodies has medium to long-term effects on both aquatic life and human health. The aim of this study is to optimize the degradation of two pharmaceutical pollutants of emerging concern: amoxicillin and acetaminophen in aqueous solution at laboratory and pilot scale, by solar photo-Fenton process carried out at neutral pH using ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) as a complexing agent to maintain iron in solution. The initial concentration of each compou...

Salidroside ameliorates acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury through the inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated ferroptosis by activating the AMPK/SIRT1 pathway
In this study, male C57BL/6 J mice were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected APAP (500 mg/kg) to induce an ALI model. Salidroside was i.p. injected at a dose of 100 mg/kg 2 h prior to APAP administration. Mice were sacrificed 12 h after APAP injection and the liver and serum of the mice were obtained for histological and biochemistry analysis. AML12 cells were used in in vitro assays. The results indicated that salidroside mitigated glutathione degradation via inhibiting cation transport regulator homolog 1 (CHAC1) to attenuate ferroptosis, and simultaneously suppressing PERK-eIF2α-ATF4 axis-mediated ER stress, thus alleviat...

Insight into iron oxychloride composite bone char for peroxymonosulfate activation: Mechanism of singlet oxygen evolution for selective degradation of organic pollutants
Chemosphere. 2023 Mar 22;326:138471. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.138471. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe activity of iron-based catalysts in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is limited by the redox cycle of Fe(III) and Fe(II). In this work, iron oxychloride (FeOCl) with a unique layered structure was loaded on the bone char (BC) to enhance the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Characterization of the FeOCl-BC catalyst reveals that the loading of FeOCl changed the composition and structure of BC and BC reduced the bond gap of FeOCl. Acetaminophen (APAP) as a target pollutant could be almost completely degraded...

Top 20 Research Studies of 2021 for Primary Care Physicians
This article summarizes the top 20 research studies of 2021 identified as POEMs (patient-oriented evidence that matters) that did not address the COVID-19 pandemic. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists prevent adverse cardiovascular and renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and also reduce all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Most older adults (mean age, 75 years) with prediabetes do not progress to diabetes. Among patients in this age group with type 2 diabetes treated with medication, an A1C level of less than 7% is associated with increased risk of...
