Exploring the correlations between < em > epi < /em > indicators of COVID-19 and the concentration of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater treatment plants in Northern Portugal
J Hazard Mater Adv. 2023 May;10:100315. doi: 10.1016/j.hazadv.2023.100315. Epub 2023 May 11.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus led to changes in the lifestyle and human behaviour, which resulted in different consumption patterns of some classes of pharmaceuticals including curative, symptom-relieving, and psychotropic drugs. The trends in the consumption of these compounds are related to their concentrations in wastewater systems, since incompletely metabolised drugs (or their metabolites back transformed into the parental form) may be detected and quantified by analytical methods. Pharmaceuticals...

Provider-directed analgesia for dental pain
This article provides an in-depth review on the major pharmacological and therapeutic properties of established and alternative analgesics used to manage dental pain.EXPERT OPINION: Substantial evidence-based literature shows a combination of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID; e.g. ibuprofen) and acetaminophen provides superior pain relief than single-agent or combination opioid regimens. However, there are clinical scenarios (e.g. severe pain) where a short-course opioid prescription is appropriate in select patients, for which a 2-3-day treatment duration is typically sufficient. Alternative agents (e.g. caff...

Heroin and fentanyl in Dallas County: A 5-year retrospective review of toxicological, seized drug, and demographical data
J Forensic Sci. 2022 Oct 27. doi: 10.1111/1556-4029.15155. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe opioid epidemic resulted in an increase in identifications of fentanyl, fentanyl analogs, and heroin, among other opioids, in the toxicology and seized drug analysis fields over the past several years. The Dallas County Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences, comprised of the Toxicology Laboratory and Drug Analysis Laboratory, observed a rise in fentanyl-positive analyses in both laboratories. Fentanyl positivity increased from 1.1% to 3.4% in the Toxicology Laboratory over the five years of this study, whereas 6-monoacetylmor...

Gabapentinoids and Acetaminophen as Adjuvants for Managing Postoperative Pain
AANA J. 2022 Jun;90(3):181-187.ABSTRACTWith the current opiate epidemic in the United States, there is renewed interest in evaluating non-opiate adjuvant medications as effective alternatives for the prevention and treatment of postoperative pain. A systematic review of randomized, controlled trials on Pub Med, Medline, and Embase was conducted looking on postoperative pain management from 2008 to 2018. Studies were included if they used a gabapentenoid with or without acetaminophen and evaluated supplemental opiate use. All adult (18 years or older) surgical populations were considered for inclusion, and fourteen clinical...
