Characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus biofilm matured in tryptic soy broth, low-fat milk, or whole milk samples along with inactivation by 405 nm light combined with folic acid
Food Microbiol. 2023 Dec;116:104350. doi: 10.1016/j.fm.2023.104350. Epub 2023 Aug 6.ABSTRACTIn the present study, the characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms matured in tryptic soy broth (TSB), low-fat milk, or whole milk samples were identified along with their resistance to 405 nm light with or without folic acid. Phenotypic properties of carbohydrate and protein contents in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of S. aureus biofilms matured in different conditions were identified. The carbohydrate content was higher in the biofilm matured in low-fat milk (1.27) than the samples matured in whole milk (0.58) a...

The patterns and position of snacking in children in aged 2-12 years: A scoping review
DISCUSSION: This scoping review provides insight into patterns and position of snacking within children's diets. Snacking plays a significant role in children's diets with multiple snacking occasions occurring throughout a child's day, the overconsumption of which has the potential to increase risk of childhood obesity. Further research is required into the role of snacking, particularly specific foods playing a role in micronutrient intake, and clear guidance for snacking intake in children.PMID:37421978 | DOI:10.1016/j.appet.2023.106974

Carbohydrate ligands-directed active tumor targeting of combinatorial chemotherapy/phototherapy-based nanomedicine: A review
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Mar 31:124294. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.124294. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhototherapies or light mediated therapies, including mutually photothermal and photodynamic therapy that encompass irradiation of the target organs with light, have been widely employed as minimally invasive approach associated with negligible drug resistance for eradicating multiple tumors with minimal hazards to normal organs. Despite all these advantages, many obstacles in phototherapy hinder progress toward clinical application. Therefore, researchers have developed nano-particulate delivery systems integrated w...

Biomarkers and the quadriceps femoris muscle architecture assessed by ultrasound in older adults with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Blood and urinary biomarkers obtained in routine analyses could help clinicians detect US outcome changes in older adults with HFpEF and identify a worsening of sarcopenia.TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03909919. Carbon dots as Reactive Nitrogen Species nanosensors
Anal Chim Acta. 2022 Apr 15;1202:339654. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2022.339654. Epub 2022 Mar 3.ABSTRACTThree sets of Carbon Dots (Cdots) were produced through the carbohydrates acid thermal decomposition method. These nanoparticles were functionalized with a polymer, known for its biological compatibility: polyethylene glycol, PEG200, and folic acid, FA, a biomolecule associated with the reactive oxygen and nitrogen (ROS/RNS) savaging process, thus resulting CdotsPEG200, CdotsPEG200FA and CdotsFA. These nanoparticles were tested as nitric oxide radical (NO·) sensors and it was determined that CdotsPEG200FA and CdotsFA fluoresce...
