Reducing Hypertension in a Post-Stroke Black and Hispanic Homecare Population: Results of a Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.
CONCLUSION: The significant across-the-board SBP decreases suggest that UHC nurse/patient/physician interactions were the central component of SBP reduction and that additional efforts to lower recurrent stroke risk should test incremental improvements in usual care, not resource-intensive transitional care interventions. They also suggest the potential value of pragmatic homecare programs as part of a broader strategy to overcome HTN treatment barriers and improve secondary stroke prevention globally. Performance of the RACE Score for the Prehospital Identification of Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke in a Suburban/Rural EMS Service.
CONCLUSION: The RACE scale demonstrated acceptable discrimination, yet the sensitivity and positive predictive value were lower in this cohort of EMS professionals in the U.S. than in the original validation study conducted in Spain. Further work is needed to determine the optimal prehospital screening tool for identification of LVO. PMID: 30668202 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

DNA methylation analyses identify an intronic < i > ZDHHC6 < /i > locus associated with time to recurrent stroke in the Vitamin Intervention for Stroke Prevention (VISP) clinical trial
by Nicole M. Davis Armstrong, Wei-Min Chen, Fang-Chi Hsu, Michael S. Brewer, Natalia Cullell, Israel Fern ández-Cadenas, Stephen R. Williams, Michèle M. Sale, Bradford B. Worrall, Keith L. Keene Aberrant DNA methylation profiles have been implicated in numerous cardiovascular diseases; however, few studies have investigated how these epigenetic modifications contribute to stroke recurrence. The aim of this study was to identify methylation loci associated with the time to recurrent cerebr o- and cardiovascular events in individuals of European and African descent. DNA methylation profiles were generated for 180 individu...

Allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells in ischaemic stroke (AMASCIS-02): a phase IIb, multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial protocol
Introduction Stroke is a serious public health problem, given it is a major cause of disability worldwide despite the spread of recanalisation therapies. Enhancement of brain plasticity with stem cell administration is a promising innovative therapy to reduce sequelae in these patients. Methods and analysis We have developed a phase IIb, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial protocol to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenous administration of allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) in patients with acute ischaemic stroke, concurrently with conventional...

The economic burden of stroke: a systematic review of cost of illness studies
J Med Life. 2021 Sep-Oct;14(5):606-619. doi: 10.25122/jml-2021-0361.ABSTRACTStroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As the number of stroke cases is rising from one year to another, policymakers require data on the amount spent on stroke to enforce better financing policies for prevention, hospital care, outpatient rehabilitation services and social services. We aimed to systematically assess the economic burden of stroke at global level. Cost of stroke studies were retrieved from five databases. We retrieved the average cost per patient, where specified, or estimated it using a top-down a...
