Metabolic Syndrome in Polish Ischemic Stroke Patients
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) predisposes individuals to cardiovascular disease or stroke development. We aimed at evaluating the prevalence of MetS in a population of acute ischemic stroke (IS) patients from central Poland and at estimating the relationship between MetS and stroke risk.

Infections Diagnosed after Admission to a Stroke Unit and Their Impact on Hospital Mortality in Poland from 1995 to 2015
Implementation of modern stroke unit care might have attenuated the negative effect of infections on stroke outcome. Our aim was to investigate changes in the occurrence of pneumonia and urinary infections diagnosed after admission to experienced Polish stroke center between 1995 and 2015, and their association with hospital mortality.

Upstream Stimulating Factor 1 (USF-1) Gene Polymorphisms and the Risk, Symptoms, and Outcome of Pediatric Ischemic Stroke
Pediatric ischemic stroke is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. As previous studies of children after stroke showed, dyslipidemias were very common in Polish and other European populations. Thus, looking for genetic factors predisposing to pediatric stroke, its symptoms, and outcome, we have analyzed 2 polymorphisms of the upstream stimulating factor 1 (USF-1) gene.

Risk factors for death by acute ischaemic stroke in patients from West-Pomerania, Poland.
CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Older age, female sex, dyslipidemia, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and smoking are not only recognised risk factors for ischaemic stroke, but also risk factors associated with an unfavourable prognosis following stroke. Organization of acute stroke services in Poland - Polish Stroke Unit Network development.
CONCLUSIONS: The SU network in Poland is developing dynamically but thrombolysis and endovascular procedures are done too rarely. Now it is necessary to improve quality of stroke services and to make organizational changes in the in-hospital stroke pathways as well as to organize continuous education of medical staff. Importance rating of risk factors of ischemic stroke in patients over 85 years old in the polish population.
CONCLUSION: The course of brain stroke in the Polish population is more severe in patients over 85 years old than in younger ones. The key risk factor in this group is atrial fibrillation. PMID: 29196059 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characteristics of hospitalizations due to acute stroke in the Silesian Province, Poland, between 2009 and 2015.
CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive long-term analysis of the epidemiological situation related to AS in the industrial region of Poland should encourage further development of educational and treatment programmes for improvement in the health status of the population. Differences in acute ischaemic stroke care in Poland: analysis of claims database of National Health Fund in 2017.
Abstract Selected and basic indicators of acute ischaemic stroke care in Poland are reported cross-regionally based on the analysis of claims data of the National Health Fund (NFZ) in 2017, the most reliable source of healthcare funding in the country, being a single public payer. For research purposes, a selection algorithm based on the diagnosis coded as I63 according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) was used to identify all ischaemic stroke patients in the claims database provided by the NFZ. Stroke units and other centres providing treatment for acute ischaemic stroke patients were exam...

Prognostic significance of age in patients with acute ischaemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis
CONCLUSIONS: AIS patients treated with reperfusion therapy and aged 80 or more have around a six times higher risk of an unfavourable outcome or death within three months of stroke onset compared to those aged below 60. Higher NIHSS score after IVT, any signs of disability before stroke as measured with mRS, and higher CRP levels are independent risk factors for worse prognosis in the elderly.PMID:35060614 | DOI:10.5603/PJNNS.a2022.0010

Relevance of admission hyperglycaemia and diabetes mellitus to efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy in stroke patients
CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes mellitus has a neutral effect on the angiographic and clinical outcomes of mechanical thrombectomy in stroke patients. It does not increase the risk of intracranial haemorrhage after instrumental therapy. It is admission hyperglycaemia, rather than diabetes mellitus, that is a predictor of poor functional status in patients treated with thrombectomy. According to our results, the patient's neurological status, age, and the outcome of thrombectomy are relevant to the functional status in the acute ischaemic stroke period.PMID:36394219 | DOI:10.5603/PJNNS.a2022.0063

Diagnostics, treatment and secondary prevention of ischemic stroke in the Silesian Province, Poland between 2009 and 2015.
CONCLUSIONS: There has been observed a significant improvement in the quality of diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemic stroke during recent years. However, further actions are required both in terms of reperfusion treatment (thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy) and secondary prevention of stroke. PMID: 29198761 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
