Frequency and predictors of post-stroke delirium in PRospective Observational POLIsh Study (PROPOLIS)
AbstractDelirium is the most common and serious neurobehavioral complication in acute hospital admissions. Some patients develop signs of delirium but do not meet all diagnostic criteria. Stroke is a major risk factor for delirium. The aim of this prospective study was to build a predictive model for delirium and subsyndromal post-stroke delirium. Patients with stroke were screened for delirium during the first 7  days after admission. Delirium was diagnosed according to DSM-V criteria. Baseline demographic, biochemical, stroke-related data, medications used, neurological deficit, and premorbid cognitive and functional im...

Epidemiological analysis of hospitalisations due to recurrent stroke in the Silesian Province, Poland, between 2009 and 2015.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first such comprehensive and long-term analysis of recurrent stroke in Silesia, Poland. It could help in the implementation of appropriate educational programmes, and thus help to improve the health status of society. PMID: 31441494 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Trends of stroke hospitalisation and fatality rates in young vs. elderly people in Poland during 2010-2019 decade
CONCLUSIONS: In the case of IS, opposite trends of hospitalisation rates in younger and older age groups were documented, with the highest increase of IS in patients aged 35-44. A decline in CFR was observed for both IS and HS in all age groups.PMID:35900165 | DOI:10.5603/PJNNS.a2022.0055

Embolic strokes of undetermined source in a cohort of Polish stroke patients
AbstractWe aimed to provide a descriptive analysis of embolic stroke of undetermined etiology (ESUS) population based on a long-term prospective stroke registry. We retrospectively analyzed data collected in a detailed registry regarding consecutive patients admitted for first-ever ischemic stroke (IS) between January 2001 and December 2015. We used Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment classification supplemented with ESUS criteria proposed by the Cryptogenic Stroke/ESUS International Working Group. Within the ESUS group, we additionally compared patients ≤ 60 and>  60 years of age. During the study period, there ...

Polish recommendations for diagnosis and therapy of paediatric stroke
Neurol Neurochir Pol. 2023 May 5. doi: 10.5603/PJNNS.a2023.0034. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke remains one of the greatest health challenges worldwide, due to a high mortality rate and, despite great progress in its treatment, the significant disability that it causes. Studies conducted around the world show that the diagnosis of stroke in children is often significantly delayed. Paediatric ischaemic arterial stroke (PAIS) is not only a problem that varies greatly in frequency compared to the adult population, it is also completely different in terms of its risk factors, clinical course and outcome. The main reason ...

Sex-related differences among ischaemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis in Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: Of the ischaemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis, women had worse long-term outcomes than men. This discrepancy may be explained by the older age and higher proportion of cardio-embolic strokes with more severe baseline deficits. However, multiple logistic analysis did not show that sex itself had an impact on the greater mortality in women after a stroke, or on the poorer prognosis. Fluoxetine for stroke recovery improvement - the doubleblind, randomised placebo-controlled FOCUS-Poland trial.
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Consistent with other trials based on the FOCUS protocol, fluoxetine did not improve motor recovery or general stroke outcome at six and 12 months in the Polish cohort studied. However, patients receiving fluoxetine required therapy with additional antidepressant medication less frequently. PMID: 33373036 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
