Managing uncertainty: Physicians' decision-making for stroke prevention for patients with atrial fibrillation and intracerebral haemorrhage
Conclusion Physicians described the process of deciding on stroke prevention in patients with AF post-ICH as 'challenging' due to considerable 'clinical equipoise'. Key factors that affected decision-making was patient comorbidities, functional status, and patient willingness to engage with oral anticoagulation therapy. Shared decision-making was believed to be beneficial, but physicians believed that the ultimate responsibility to decide on stroke prevention lay with the clinician.PMID:35253141 | DOI:10.1055/a-1789-4824

Probability of TCD-Normalization in the "Drepagreffe" Trial Comparing Transplantation to Chronic Transfusion in Sickle Cell Anemia Children with Abnormal-Transcranial Doppler Is Associated with Lower Ang-2 and BDNF Plasma Levels
This study confirms the association between high levels of BDNF and high velocities, and suggests that transplantation increases the likelihood of TCD-normalization compared to transfusion, and is associated with reduced Ang-2 expression in plasma, which may reflect improved brain oxygenation.DisclosuresThuret: Addmedica: Research Funding; bluebird bio: Research Funding; Novartis: Research Funding. Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem-Cell Transplantation for Patients with Richter's Syndrome:the SFGM-TC Experience
Conclusion. Our study suggests that allo-HCT is a strategy achieving prolonged survival but should be performed in young patients to limit the risk of NRM. The favorable impact of GVHd suggests an anti-RS allogenic effect.DisclosuresGuieze: abbvie: Honoraria; janssen: Honoraria; gilead: Honoraria.

A Polymorphism in Toll-like Receptor 2 Gene Is Associated with Occurrence of Bacterial Infections in Sickle Cell Disease Patients
Discussion: In SCD pts, TLR-2 rs4696480 TA genotype might be protective against bacterial infections, whereas TT genotype might increase risk of such infections. Previous reports demonstrated higher secretion of inflammatory factors in cells from AA individuals, lower occurrence and severity of immune diseases in T carriers. TA genotype might stand between deleterious effects of over inflammatory response (AA genotype) and under response (TT genotype) to infectious agents.DisclosuresNo relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Measuring Health-Related Quality of Life in Sickle Cell Disease Patients Undergoing Automated Red Blood Cell Exchange in the USA, France and the UK
ConclusionSickle cell disease patients that require chronic blood transfusion experience better health-related quality of life when they are treated with automated red blood cell exchange versus simple transfusion. This observation is supported by the opinion of their treating physicians.DisclosuresDierick: Terumo BCT: Employment. Roig: Terumo BCT: Employment.

Adverse transfusion reactions with neurological signs in transfused patients.
CONCLUSION: Unconsciousness and/or convulsions were rarely observed in adverse reactions reported in transfused patients. Nevertheless, the presence of these signs highlights the severity of the adverse reactions (17 reactions, 85.0%). PMID: 32122763 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

C-reactive protein and D-dimer in cerebral vein thrombosis: Relation to clinical and imaging characteristics as well as outcomes in a French cohort study
CONCLUSION: Two widely available biomarkers measured upon admission, especially hs-CRP, could help predict bad prognosis in CVST in addition to patient characteristics. These results need to be validated in other cohorts.PMID:37138790 | PMC:PMC10149398 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100130
