The association between labour epidural analgesia and postpartum depression in primiparous patients: a historical cohort study
CONCLUSION: This historical cohort study found an association between LEA and PPD among primiparous patients who subsequently had a second pregnancy in the same province. The findings call into question the hypothesis that LEA decreases the risk for PPD and further illustrates the complexities of PPD.PMID:37726496 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02568-2

Risk factors for recurrence of post-dural puncture headache following an epidural blood patch: a retrospective cohort study
Neuraxial analgesia and anaesthesia is widely used to control pain during labour and delivery. Approximately 55% of women in the United Kingdom, 60% in Canada, 65% in the United States of America (USA) and 82% in France give birth under neuraxial anaesthesia.1 –4 One of the most common and serious complications is post-dural puncture headache (PDPH). 5 This occurs in 0.38-6.3% of neuraxial procedures6–9 and is a common cause of litigation in the USA.10 Post-dural puncture headache causes severe discomfort and can lead, in some circumstances, to second ary brain injuries.

Surgeon Sex and Long-Term Postoperative Outcomes Among Patients Undergoing Common Surgeries
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: After accounting for patient, procedure, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and hospital characteristics, the findings of this cohort study suggest that patients treated by female surgeons have lower rates of adverse postoperative outcomes including death at 90 days and 1 year after surgery compared with those treated by male surgeons. These findings further support differences in patient outcomes based on physician sex that warrant deeper study regarding underlying causes and potential solutions.PMID:37647075 | PMC:PMC10469289 | DOI:10.1001/jamasurg.2023.3744

Topical ophthalmic anesthetics for corneal abrasions
CONCLUSIONS: Despite topical anesthetics providing excellent pain control in the intraoperative setting, the currently available evidence provides little or no certainty about their efficacy for reducing ocular pain in the initial 24 to 72 hours after a corneal abrasion, whether from unintentional trauma or surgery. We have very low confidence in this evidence as a basis to recommend topical anesthetics as an efficacious treatment modality to relieve pain from corneal abrasions. We also found no evidence of a substantial effect on epithelial healing up to 72 hours or a reduction in ocular complications when we compared ane...
