Treatment intervals and survival for women diagnosed with early breast cancer in Queensland: the Breast Cancer Outcomes Study, a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Breast cancer-specific survival was poorer for women for whom the diagnosis to surgery, surgery to chemotherapy, or chemotherapy to radiotherapy intervals exceeded guideline-recommended limits. Our findings support 2020 Australian guideline recommendations regarding timely care.PMID:37667512 | DOI:10.5694/mja2.52091

Understanding household healthcare expenditure can promote health policy reform
Health Econ Policy Law. 2023 Aug 17:1-24. doi: 10.1017/S1744133123000129. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudies of health care expenditure often exclude explanatory variables measuring wealth, despite the intuitive importance and policy relevance. We use the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey to assess impacts of income and wealth on health expenditure. Successes and challenges of primary health care in Australia: A scoping review and comparative analysis
CONCLUSION: Primary health care in Australia, which has evolved through major reforms, has been adapting to the complex health care needs of the socio-culturally diversified nation, and has achieved many of the PC attributes, including service diversity, accessibility, acceptability, and quality of care. Yet, there are persistent gaps in service delivery to socio-economically disadvantaged populations, including indigenous people, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations, and rural- and remote-residents. Asia Pac J Clin Oncol. 2023 Jun 25. doi: 10.1111/ajco.13973. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTReturn to work (RTW) is a marker of functional recovery for working-age cancer survivors. Identifying factors that impact on RTW in cancer survivors is an essential step to guide further research and interventions to support RTW. This systematic review aimed to identify nontreatment, non-cancer-related variables impacting RTW in Australian cancer survivors. A systematic search was conducted in EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Studies were eligible if they included: (1) adults living post diagnosis of malignancy; ...

The health care and societal costs of inherited retinal diseases in Australia: a microsimulation modelling study
CONCLUSION: As the societal costs associated with IRDs are much larger than the health care costs, both contributors should be considered when assessing the cost-effectiveness of interventions for people with IRDs. The increasing loss of income across life reflects the impact of IRDs on employment and career opportunities.PMID:37301731 | DOI:10.5694/mja2.51997

Financial toxicity experienced by rural Australian families with chronic kidney disease
CONCLUSION: Rural households experience considerable financial hardship due to out-of-pocket costs in accessing treatment for CKD and other health-related care, raising concerns about equity in Australia, a high-income country with universal healthcare.PMID:37286370 | DOI:10.1111/nep.14192
