Conclusion A relatively simple frailty scale and comorbidity score could be used to predict survival and better inform the shared decision-making process for patients with advanced kidney disease.

Sharing innovations to enhance renal fellow education in dialysis
Abstract Dialysis care is an integral part of the practice of nephrology. Despite this, education of fellows in providing dialysis often remains rudimentary, relying on a combination of didactics and learning through experience. This runs the risk of training nephrologists who can provide dialysis care without truly being experts on the subject. In this article, a collection of novel or innovative teaching methods is presented that are meant to provide training programs with additional tools with which to improve the training of their fellows in dialysis.

Nurses experiences of using clinical competencies a qualitative study
Nurses working in haemodialysis units are expected to demonstrate competency and understanding of the technical processes involved in supporting patients undergoing haemodialysis treatment. In 2012 the nursing education team within a large acute National Health Service (NHS) London Hospital Group updated and standardised haemodialysis clinical competencies to assist junior haemodialysis nurses develop their clinical skills and knowledge in delivering nursing care to patients receiving haemodialysis treatment.

Outset Medical, previously Home Dialysis Plus, said it raised $91 million in a new funding round, with $51 million in equity and $40 million in debt funding. Avenu Medical pulls in $6m for Ellipsys AV fistula device
Vascular access system maker Avenu Medical raised $6 million in a new round of debt financing, according to an SEC filing. Avenu Medical, founded in 2010, is developing and producing the Ellipsys vascular access image-guided catheter system, designed to percutaneously create arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis access. Texas Medical Centers adds 11 medtech startups to incubator

Fresenius to pay $2B for NxStage Medical
Fresenius Medical Care (NYSE:FMS; ETR:FRE) said today that it agreed to pay $2 billion to acquire NxStage Medical (NSDQ:NXTM) and the home hemodialysis technology it developed. The $30-per-share deal, which is expected to close this year, represents a 29.6% premium on the August 4 closing price of $23.14 for NXTM shares. The stock was up 25.5% to $29.04 today in pre-market trading. FRE shares were down -1.2% to €69.14 apiece today in Frankfurt.
