Simulation-based medical education training improves short and long-term competency in, and knowledge of central venous catheter insertion: A before and after intervention study
BACKGROUND: Multimodal educational interventions have been shown to improve short-term competency in, and knowledge of central venous catheter (CVC) insertion. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of simulation-based medical education training in improving short and long-term competency in, and knowledge of CVC insertion. DESIGN: Before and after intervention study. SETTING: University Geneva Hospital, Geneva, Switzerland, between May 2008 and January 2012. PARTICIPANTS: Residents in anaesthesiology aware of the Seldinger technique for vascular puncture. INTERVENTION: Participants attended a half-day course on CVC...

Study examines incidence, trend of substance use disorder among medical residents
Among anesthesiology residents entering primary training from 1975 to 2009, 0.86 percent had a confirmed substance use disorder during training, with the incidence of this disorder increasing over the study period and the risk of relapse high, according to a study appearing in the December 4 issue of JAMA, a medical education theme issue. Substance use disorder (SUD) is a serious public health problem, and physicians are susceptible.

The Role of Simulation in Continuing Medical Education for Acute Care Physicians: A Systematic Review*
Conclusions: Simulation is perceived as a positive learning experience with limited evidence to support improved learning. Future research should focus on the optimal modality and frequency of exposure, quality of assessment tools and on the impact of simulation-based education beyond the individuals toward improved patient care.

Full-scale simulation in German medical schools and anesthesia residency programs : Status quo.
CONCLUSIONS: Important first steps have been taken to implement full-scale simulation in Germany. In addition to programs for medical students courses for physicians and nurses are available today. To reach everyone clinically involved in German anesthesiology on a regular basis the current capacities need to be dramatically increased. The basis for that to happen will be new concepts for funding, possibly supported by external requirements such as the national model curriculum for residency in anesthesiology. A Consensus-Driven Revision of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Case Log System: Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship Education
CONCLUSIONS: The pediatric anesthesiology case log system continues to have a place in the assessment of fellowship programs, but it requires an update. This Delphi process established broad support for new categories and benchmarked minimums to ensure the robustness of fellowship programs and to better prepare the pediatric anesthesiology workforce of the future for independent clinical practice.PMID:35773224 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006129
