Implementation of a Low-Cost Quality Improvement Intervention Increases Adherence to Cancer Screening Guidelines and Reduces Healthcare Costs at a University Medical Center
AbstractAdherence to US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) cancer screening guidelines remains considerably lower than the recommendation of the Healthy People 2020 initiative. Patient populations recommended for screening are not screened at an appropriate rate, and populations not recommended for screening are inappropriately screened. Closer adherence to guidelines should improve outcomes and reduce costs, estimated to reach $158 billion/year by 2020. We evaluated whether a use of low-cost educational health maintenance (HM) card by medical residents at a university hospital could impact education and adherence t...

Orthopedic Oncology Experience During Residency
The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics and logistics of orthopedic oncology rotations at various residency programs across the USA and determine the effect of orthopedic oncology rotations on Orthopedic In-Training Examination (OITE) scores. An eight-question survey was sent to 162 orthopedic surgery residency programs obtained from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education public database. Pre-oncology rotation and post-oncology rotation OITE scores for 24 residents at a major academic medical center were collected and analyzed. The response rate was 43.8%. Survey results were as f...

Video-Based Education in Lung Cancer Screening
The objective of this study is to shed light on the role of YouTube in lung cancer screening in terms of guidelines, screening options, target population, steps after screening, and risks and benefits of screening. We searchedYouTube.com™ to identify videos dealing with lung screening using the keywords: lung cancer screening. Videos without sound, uploaded before 2009, longer than 20 min, duplicate videos, and videos in a language other than English were excluded. This method yielded 123 videos that fit criteria. Videos were cod ed for inclusion of LC screening process, risks and benefits of screening, screening guideli...

Education Competencies for Integrative Oncology —Results of a Systematic Review and an International and Interprofessional Consensus Procedure
AbstractIntegrative oncology is a burgeoning field and typically provided by a multiprofessional team. To ensure cancer patients receive effective, appropriate, and safe care, health professionals providing integrative cancer care should have a certain set of competencies. The aim of this project was to define core competencies for different health professions involved in integrative oncology. The project consisted of two phases. A systematic literature review on published competencies was performed, and the results informed an international and interprofessional consensus procedure. The second phase consisted of three rou...

Dental Practice Patterns for Oral Care in Medical Oncology Patients —a Survey-Based Assessment of Massachusetts Dentists
AbstractOral complications associated with cancer therapy lead to a significant deterioration of oral health and overall quality of life. The primary aim of this study was to assess dental practice patterns followed by dentists for oral care of medical oncology patients and to identify potential barriers to recommended care. A questionnaire-based survey was developed using the Qualtrics online platform. It was electronically distributed to all dentists within the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS). Descriptive statistics were automatically computed by Qualtrics. A total of 363 responses (10.7%) were received. Dentists repo...

A Not So Perfect Score: Factors Associated with the Rate of Straight Line Scoring in Oncology Training Programs
AbstractStraight line scoring (SLS), defined as trainee assessments with the same score for all evaluation items, is statistically improbable and potentially indicates inaccurate assessment. Factors contributing to higher SLS rates are unknown, and knowledge of SLS prevalence within oncologic training is lacking. SLS frequency was measured for evaluations from all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited programs at a single cancer care institution between 2014 and 2018. SLS prevalence was estimated using hierarchical linear models (HLM) that considered characteristics of evaluator, trainee, ...

Needs for Cancer Education In Oman Based on the Breast Cancer Screening Program
This study aimed at estimating the proportion and predictors of OCA-screened women who had repeated mammography (adherence) and the sensitivity and specificity of the program. Demographic, screening, diagnosis, and treatment data of 13,079 women screened in the OCA mammography clinic from 2009 to 2016, and medical records of all breast cancer patients seen at Royal and Sultan Qaboos University hospitals during the same period were retrieved. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify predictors of adherence. A total of 8278 screened women over age 42  years (median age of 50 ± 8 years) were included in t...

Resident-Reported Impact of a Novel Oncology Curriculum for Internal Medicine Residents
AbstractThe Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education mandates that all internal medicine residents gain exposure to internal medicine subspecialties including hematology and oncology. While many residents meet this criterion through inpatient oncology rotations, the current structure of many inpatient oncology rotations leaves little opportunity for formal education. We therefore designed a novel oncology curriculum consisting of one-page oncology teaching sheets to increase the number, breadth, and quality of formal teaching sessions on our resident inpatient oncology services. In order to evaluate the curricul...

Pilot Study Demonstrating the Value of Interdisciplinary Education on the Integration of Radiation Therapy in Lung Cancer Management
This study aimed to understand baseline knowledge of basic principles of radiation therapy for lung cancer among medical oncology, thoracic surgery, and pulmonology trainees and practicing physicians and also assess whether a didactic lecture will improve objective knowledge and perceived comfort level in making appropriate referrals to radiation oncology (RO). Radiation oncologists at 8 academic institutions offered a presentation covering indications, logistics, efficacy, and toxicity of thoracic radiation. Participants completed a survey to assess their prior exposures to RO and perceived value of the lecture, and objec...

Seeking Racial Equity in Hematology and Oncology: a Fellow-Led Educational Series to Promote Reflection and Action
AbstractThe USA is experiencing a reckoning with racial injustice and graduate medical education programs are seeking ways to address this important topic in training. Fellows in hematology/oncology at the University of North Carolina recognized this important gap and adapted a curriculum for medical residents on racial equity to a subspecialty audience. Aims were (1) to improve knowledge and awareness about implicit bias and systemic racism and (2) introduce methods to address racial inequities. We used lived experiences and collated materials from scientific literature and lay media to illustrate key points. The course e...

Teaching communication skills in medical education
ConclusionAlthough the evaluation results cannot be generalized to the entirety of medical students due to the limited number of voluntary participants, the very positive evaluation shows the need for such projects among students and can also be seen as an indication that radiation oncology as a  patient-centered discipline is particularly well suited to teach medical communication.

Abstract A83: Diversity by race, Hispanic ethnicity, and sex of the United States medical oncology physician workforce
Conclusions: Females and URM are underrepresented in the MO physician workforce relative to the US population. Female representation as fellows has increased significantly over the past quarter century at 1% per annum and is increased relative to practicing physicians and academic faculty, indicating historical gains. Meanwhile, there are no significant increases in URM groups over the past 17 yrs, suggesting that racial and ethnic diversity are not increasing. Furthermore, for Blacks alone, representation as fellows is decreased compared to IM residents, suggesting a greater disparity in Blacks entering MO training. Given...
