Current Knowledge and Opinions of Medical Trainees Regarding PSA Screening
AbstractAfter 2008 and 2012 USPSTF recommendations against PSA screening, studies revealed a decline in screening rates and trend towards more advanced disease at presentation. After revision of this recommendation in 2017, PSA screening guidelines remain inconsistent and controversy still exists about its clinical utility. We seek to better understand the knowledge of medical trainees regarding this fundamental controversy and gain better insight into what they are being taught regarding this topic. Participants were medical students (n = 66) and residents (n = 60) from a single institution. REDCap software was us...

Cancer Care Continuum Research and Educational Innovation: Are Academic Internists Keeping up with Population Trends?
AbstractAcademic internists play a unique role in conducting innovative research, developing educational curricula, and influencing policy. As the population of patients living with and beyond cancer is expected to reach 22 million by 2030, it is essential for academic internists to lead innovative research in clinical care and medical education across the cancer care continuum. We characterized cancer-related topics presented at the 2015 –2019 annual meetings of the Society of General Internal Medicine, a national organization of over 3,000 academic general internists. We analyzed all scientific (n = 3,437), Innovat...

Developing an Education Pathway for Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Rapid Diagnostic Testing: Investigating Informational and Supportive Care Needs
AbstractSeveral studies have examined the informational needs of patients undergoing the breast diagnostic process where needs are highest during testing and prior to receiving a diagnosis. To aid in the development of an education pathway, we identified patient information needs. A multi-method approach to identify areas of need and to understand when and how information should be provided to patients was undertaken. The methods included an environmental scan of consumer health information, ethnographic observation of the patient clinical experience, key informant interviews, and a needs assessment survey. The data collec...

Improving Access to Patient Education: an Audit of Extant Educational Materials
AbstractHealth information exchange between provider and patient, along with patient participation in their care (self-management), can lead to improved health outcomes. A step towards achieving better outcomes is the systematic provision of education materials to patients and caregivers throughout the cancer trajectory. An audit of patient education (PE) materials was conducted at a cancer center to identify content gaps and determine areas for future development. The PE audit was conducted in all outpatient clinics (13) and clinic-specific PE materials were identified, reviewed, and categorized by cancer type and under t...

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Education and Knowledge Among Medical and Dental Trainees
The objectives of this study were to (1) assess medical and dental trainees’ baseline knowledge regarding HPV and HPV vaccine, (2) determine the willingness to recommend the HPV vaccine to patients, and (3) evaluate the i mpact of an online intervention on HPV-related knowledge. Medical and dental trainees from two large academic centers in the USA were asked to fill out an online pre-intervention questionnaire, followed by a 10-min HPV educational intervention based on the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (C DC) resources, and then a post-intervention questionnaire. There were 75 participants (67.4% females; med...

Effectiveness of an Educational Program on Awareness of Cancer Risk Factors, Symptoms, and Barriers to Medical Help-Seeking Among Adolescent Omani Students: an Interventional Study
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a cancer education program among Omani adolescents. A total of 12 public schools were randomly selected from three governorates and assigned to either the intervention or control group. Students attending grades 10 and 11 at the selected schools were targeted. The Cancer Awareness Measure tool was used to evaluate knowledge of cancer risk factors and symptoms, perceived barriers to seeking medical help, and anticipated time to consult a doctor for cancer warning symptoms at baseline (T0) and after 4  weeks (T1). After T0, the intervention group participated in a 1-h cancer...

Adapting a Medical School Cancer Research Education Program to the Virtual Environment: a Mixed-Methods Study
This study investigates positive and negative aspects of the varying educational formats. A mixed-methods approach was used to evaluate the educational formats. Pre- and post-surveys were collected from participants to assess their understanding of cancer as a clinical and research discipline. Structured interviews were conducted across all three cohorts, and thematic analysis was used to generate themes. A total of 37 students participated in SOAR and completed surveys (2019n = 11, 2020n = 14, and 2021n = 12), and 18 interviews were conducted. Understanding of oncology as a clinical (p <  0.01 for all) ...

Right Information, Right Patient, Right Time: Utilizing the MyCareCompass Platform to Deliver Patient Education in the Oncology Setting
AbstractPatient education is an important part of cancer care as it increases patient activation and informed decision-making, reduces anxiety, and improves outcomes. However, challenges to providing appropriate education to patients exist on both the health provider and patient side of the equation, e.g., time constraints and health literacy issues. Digital health education is a fast-growing field of interest that has been shown to improve health outcomes, increase effectiveness of medical treatments and education, lower medical costs, and enhance both clinical diagnosis and research opportunities by streamlining data col...

Trainee Evaluations of Preparedness for Clinical Trials in Medical Oncology-A National Questionnaire
CONCLUSION: This is the first study in Canada to assess competencies in any residency training program since the establishment of CBME. Training in conducting clinical trials is highly variable across MO programs in Canada, with most trainees finding current practices not translating into self-perceived competence and preparedness. Further assessment into how to produce competent clinical trial investigators is warranted.PMID:37623034 | PMC:PMC10453465 | DOI:10.3390/curroncol30080553
