Ultrasound’s role in detecting enthesitis in psoriatic arthritis remains debatable
MIAMI – Ultrasound-detected enthesitis was associated with both destructive and bone formation lesions on radiography of peripheral and axial joints in a study of 222 patients with psoriatic arthritis. But its lack of correlation to clinically detected enthesitis in this study and in others has...

Premedication of pregnant patients with history of iodinated contrast allergy
Abstract Pregnant patients can receive allergy premedication prior to a contrast-enhanced computed tomography exam if the exam is indicated. The risks and benefits of allergy premedication for pregnant patients will be discussed, as well as imaging strategies for the pregnant patient with a contrast allergy. Alternative imaging including ultrasound, noncontrast magnetic resonance imaging, or noncontrast computed tomography can be diagnostic depending on the clinical scenario and is usually preferred, allowing physicians to avoid giving allergy premedication in pregnancy, a 13  h delay, and risking a breakthrough reaction.

Clinical experiences of the continuous thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) block
An ultrasound-guided thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) block is reported as postoperative pain for lumbar vertebra surgery [1,2]. However, TLIP block cannot relieve long-term pain because the reported TLIP block can perform only single injection. This time, we report 2 cases that performed continuous TLIP block for lumbar vertebra surgeries. Case 1 was a 51-year-old woman who underwent lumbar laminoplasty at L3-4. She has had acetaminophen drug allergy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug allergy.

First step in the development of an ultrasound joint inflammation score for rheumatoid arthritis using a data-driven approach
Conclusions The reduced GSUS and PDUS scores retained most of the information from the total score and performed well in a validation cohort of established RA. Trial registation number NCT01205854, ACTRN12610000284066.

Intravascular ultrasound guided mesenteric stenting in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease
Endovascular treatment of chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI) in patients with impaired renal function or allergy to contrast media is a challenging procedure because angiography requires iodinated contrast media for accurate diagnosis and interventional procedures. Superior mesenteric artery stenting without contrast angiography is described in an 81-year-old female with cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 5. Balloon angioplasty and stent placement were performed successfully using intravascular ultrasound, pressure wire, surface ultrasound, and fluoroscopy.

Genetic mutations in accordance with a low malignant potential tumour are not demonstrated in clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma
Clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma (CCPRCC) cases were evaluated for mutations on the following genes: KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, PIK3CA, ALK, ERBB2, DDR2, MAP2K1, RET and EGFR. Four male and three female patients of age 42–74 years were evaluated. All cases were incidentally detected by ultrasound and ranged 1.8–3.5 cm. Microscopic examination showed variably tubulopapillary, tubular acinar, cystic architecture and the characteristic linear arrangement of nuclei. The cells were reactive with CK7 (strong), CA IX (cup-shape) and 34 β E12. CD10, AMACR/RACEMASE and GATA3 were negative. There were no m...

Targeting ultrasound remission in early rheumatoid arthritis: the results of the TaSER study, a randomised clinical trial
Conclusions In early RA, a MSUS-driven T2T strategy led to more intensive treatment, but was not associated with significantly better clinical or imaging outcomes than a DAS28-driven strategy. Trial registration number NCT00920478.

Ultrasound-detected inflammation predicts radiographic progression in hand osteoarthritis after 5 years
Conclusions Ultrasound-detected GS synovitis and PD signals were significantly associated with radiographic progression after 5 years. This study supports the use of ultrasound as a tool to detect patients with hand OA who are likely to progress.

Ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections for adhesive capsulitis more effective than placebo
Commentary on: Prestgaard T, Wormgoor ME, Haugen S, et al.. Ultrasound-guided intra-articular and rotator interval corticosteroid injections in adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder: a double-blind, sham-controlled randomized study. Pain 2015;156:1683–91. Context Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder or painful stiff shoulder) is relatively common. It is idiopathic: known associated factors include trauma, diabetes, prolonged immobilisation, age, stroke and autoimmune disease. While self-limited, pain and decreased range of motion can last up to 2–3 years. Therefore, there is practical value in therapeutic in...

Digital ulcers predict a worse disease course in patients with systemic sclerosis
Conclusions In patients with SSc, HDU at presentation predicts the occurrence of DUs at follow-up and is associated with cardiovascular worsening and decreased survival.

Intrauterine inflammation, cerebral oxygen consumption and susceptibility to early brain injury in very preterm newborns
Conclusions Although P/IVH is multifactorial in preterm newborns, it is likely that cerebral hypoxic-ischaemia plays a central pathophysiological role. These data provide a mechanistic insight into this process and suggests that the increased cerebral metabolic load imposed by the presence of inflammation results in a higher risk of critical hypoxic ischaemia in the preterm with increased susceptibility to significant P/IVH.
