An update on ocular allergy
Purpose of review: The update reviews prevalence, classification, cause, and treatment options for allergic eye disease. Recent findings: The incidence of allergic eye disease is underreported but may affect almost all patients with allergic rhinitis. Increased rates of oculonasal symptoms have been reported in the United States resulting in significant economic expenditures. The spectrum of allergic conjunctivitis and its differential considerations include seasonal and perennial conjunctivitis, vernal and atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis. Patients with allergic conjunctivitis have classic ...

Component resolved diagnostics for hymenoptera venom allergy
Purpose of review: Component-resolved diagnostics makes use of defined allergen molecules to analyse IgE-mediated sensitizations at a molecular level. Here, we review recent studies on the use of component-resolved diagnostics in the field of Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) and discuss its benefits and limitations. Recent findings: Component resolution in HVA has moved from single molecules to panels of allergens. Detection of specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) to marker and cross-reactive venom allergens has been reported to facilitate the discrimination between primary sensitization and cross-reactivity and thus, to provi...

Cross-elicitation responses to 2-methoxymethyl-p-phenylenediamine in p-phenylenediamine highly allergic volunteers using allergy alert test: the Italian experience.
Conclusion: Most SR during UR were mild with no need for adrenaline treatment. The honey bee venom and the severity of the anaphylaxis during the field sting were the only SR´s risk factors for systemic adverse reactions during the UR. PMID: 30702236 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Natural history and long-term follow-up of Hymenoptera allergy
Purpose of review Information on the natural history of hypersensitivity reactions is helpful for deciding which patient urgently needs a venom immunotherapy (VIT). Recent findings The frequency of self-reported systemic allergic reactions (SAR) to Hymenoptera stings is approximately 3–7% in the Northern Hemisphere. About 25% of SAR are severe (anaphylactic shock). Fatal sting reactions are very rare. The most important risk factor for severe insect sting anaphylaxis is mast cell disease. Other risk factors are higher age, vespid venom allergy (in contrast to honeybee venom allergy), repeated stings, male sex, and t...

Cow's milk allergy
Purpose of review To highlight the most recent insights on cow's milk allergy (CMA), its treatment, and management. Recent findings CMA is one of the most common food allergies among children. Burdened by the risk for fatal reaction, CMA may imply also a severe impairment of health-related quality of life at individual and family level as well as well as individual and societal costs. The updated Diagnosis and Rationale for Action against Cow's Milk Allergy series is going to provide a series of manuscripts that will offer a comprehensive state-of-the-art specifically on CMA, including international evidence-bas...

Current insights: a systemic review of therapeutic options for peanut allergy
Purpose of review With increasing prevalence of peanut allergy (PA) globally and the greater risk of potential reactions occurring due to the leading role of nuts in food products, PA has become a significant public health concern over the past decade, affecting up to 5 million of the US adult population. This review details updates and advances in prevalence, diagnosis, and immunotherapies that have occurred over the past year. Recent findings Therapeutic and diagnostic advances remain at the forefront of research and have continued to push the food allergy (FA) field forward to provide a promising role in the ...

Secondary prevention of latex allergy
Purpose of review The present review addresses the secondary prevention in healthcare worker, healthcare setting, and in patients outside the healthcare setting. Recent findings There is sufficient knowledge of the broad aetiology of latex allergy for secondary preventive programmes to be widely adopted. Currently, avoidance of latex-containing surgical products is mandatory in the care of sensitized patients. They should also have a list of occult sources of natural rubber latex exposure and cross-reacting fruits. During all health-care procedures latex allergic patients should be treated in a ‘latex-free’ ...
