Intravitreal allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells: a non-randomized phase II clinical trial for acute non-arteritic optic neuropathy
CONCLUSIONS: Besides the development of an epiretinal membrane in one patient, the intravitreal application of allogeneic BM-MSCs appeared to be intraocularly well tolerated. Consequently, not only NA-AION but also BM-MSCs deserve more clinical investigational resources and a larger randomized multicenter trial that would provide stronger evidence both about safety and the potential therapeutic efficacy of intravitreally injected allogeneic BM-MSCs in acute NA-AION.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Safety Assessment of Intravitreal Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Acute Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NEUROSTEM). Potential of mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned medium/secretome as a therapeutic option for ocular diseases
Regen Med. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.2217/rme-2023-0089. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch has shown that the therapeutic effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is partially due to its secreted factors as opposed to the implantation of the cells into the treated tissue or tissue replacement. MSC secretome, especially in the form of conditioned medium (MSC-CM) is now being explored as an alternative to MSCs transplantation. Despite the observed benefits of MSC-CM, only a few clinical trials have evaluated it and other secretome components in the treatment of eye diseases. This review provides insight into the potential the...

Suprachoroidal spheroidal mesenchymal stem cell implantation in retinitis pigmentosa: clinical results of 6  months follow-up
CONCLUSION: Suprachoroidal implantation of MSCs in the form of spheroids as a stem cell therapy for RP patients with relatively good visual acuity has an improving effect on BCVA, VF and mfERG recordings during the 6-month follow-up period. Spheroidal MSCs with enhanced effects may be more successful in preventing apoptosis and improving retinal tissue healing in RP patients.PMID:37705097 | DOI:10.1186/s13287-023-03489-z

Application of IPSC and M üller glia derivatives in retinal degenerative diseases
Prog Mol Biol Transl Sci. 2023;199:351-362. doi: 10.1016/bs.pmbts.2023.03.026. Epub 2023 Apr 27.ABSTRACTRetinal degenerative diseases cause blindness characterized by a progressive decline in the number and function of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), photoreceptor cells, and ganglion cells. Such diseases include retinitis pigmentosa (RP), glaucomatous optic neuropathy, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic optic neuropathy. Recent studies have demonstrated that Müller glial cells (MGCs), an endogenous alternative source of retinal neurons, are important glial cells involved in retinal development, damage, and re...

hPSC-derived RPE transplantation for the treatment of macular degeneration
Prog Mol Biol Transl Sci. 2023;199:227-269. doi: 10.1016/bs.pmbts.2023.02.010. Epub 2023 Mar 14.ABSTRACTMacular degeneration (MD) is a group of diseases characterized by irreversible and progressive vision loss. Patients with MD suffer from severely impaired central vision, especially elderly people. Currently, only one type of MD, wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), can be treated with anti-vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF) drugs. Other types of MD remain difficult to treat. With the advent of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and their differentiation into retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE), it is prom...
