Accumulated Secretions and Associated Aerodigestive Function in Patients With Dysphagia
CONCLUSIONS: This large study contributes to evidence associating both sensory and motor impairments with secretion accumulation and aspiration risk. Further exploration of the key physiological mechanisms contributing to accumulated secretions will serve as markers to provide proof of principle for targets for secretion management protocols.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24101667.PMID:37696043 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00118

The Introduction of a Protocol for Esophageal Screening in Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies: Exploring Clinical Impacts and Barriers
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms that routine esophageal screening provides additional clinical information to assist holistic dysphagia management without adverse operational impacts. Further research with the multidisciplinary dysphagia team has commenced to continue to optimize and refine esophageal screening practice.PMID:37668538 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00022

Profiling Number of Swallows per Bolus and Residue in Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
CONCLUSION AND INFERENCES: pALS demonstrated a higher number of swallows per bolus compared to healthy reference data that may represent a compensation for reductions in swallowing efficiency to clear pharyngeal residue.PMID:37591233 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00209

Ischemic Stroke Management: Posthospitalization and Transition of Care
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Jul;108(1):70-77.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack exist on a continuum of the same disease process. Ischemic stroke is common, and more than 85% of stroke risk is attributed to modifiable risk factors. The initial management of acute stroke is usually performed in the emergency department and hospital settings. Family physicians have a key role in follow-up, ensuring that a complete diagnostic evaluation has been performed, addressing modifiable risk factors, facilitating rehabilitation, and managing chronic s...

Associations of Dietary Intake With Self-Reported Hearing Loss: Findings From the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin
CONCLUSIONS: Dietary intake was associated with self-reported hearing loss. Research on mechanistic pathways of associations and public health interventions to prevent hearing loss is needed.PMID:37263020 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00473

A Survey of Community Providers on Feeding Problems in Autism Spectrum Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate a high demand for treatment of children with ASD and feeding problems across disciplines. Food selectivity was the most common problem. Treatment approaches varied across disciplines. Dissemination and implementation of evidence-based, parent-mediated intervention is warranted.PMID:37256479 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-023-06013-7
