Food and Nutrition Education, Policy and Training in the UK.
Authors: Ballam R Abstract In the context of child health in the UK, the focus is centered on childhood obesity, with one in 10 children aged 4-5 years being overweight or obese, rising to one in 3 children by the age of 11-15 years. Why Quality Seeds Are among the Most Valuable Currency in Climate Finance for Africa
Joy of Marketing - Ethiopia. Credit: International Seed FederationBy Michael KellerVAUD, Switzerland, May 16 2023 (IPS) At long last, momentum is growing for an overdue rethink of climate finance and development assistance to support countries on the frontlines of the climate crisis. But while investment, aid and compensation are all much needed, another form of currency is equally valuable for climate-vulnerable countries that are also highly dependent on small-scale agriculture: quality seeds. The latest generation of seeds offers varieties adapted to specific climatic circumstances to provide more reliable food product...

Why Alcohol Companies Are Betting on Non-Alcoholic ‘Booze’
It’s a Wednesday evening in Brooklyn, NY, and bars are dead. Tea-candle-dotted tables sit empty, waiting for a happy hour rush that isn’t. But tucked away on a side street, hours before its midnight closing time, a bar called Getaway hums with activity. Metal straws clink against ice and cocktail shakers rattle as patrons belly up to the marble bar. A woman fresh out of work reads and nurses a drink at a corner table. An early-thirties couple chats over a pre-dinner beverage, holding hands in the flattering dim lighting. This is New York City’s first permanent booze-free bar, and no one is drinking alcoho...

As the Number of Vaping-Related Deaths Climbs, These States Have Implemented E-Cigarette Bans
Amid growing concern over a mysterious outbreak of vaping-related lung illnesses and deaths, as well as a persistent epidemic of youth use, states are stepping in to limit access to e-cigarette products. State vaping bans are filling what many see as a regulatory void caused by federal inaction. E-cigarettes work by vaporizing a liquid mixture of nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals, and many proponents argue that they are a healthier alternative to cigarettes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not gain regulatory power over e-cigarettes until 2016, so many popular brands that launched before that date, includ...

Top 34 Bestselling ‘ Fruit ’ Drinks For Kids Deemed Unhealthy
(CNN) — Americans spent $1.4 billion on the most popular brands of children’s fruit drinks and flavored waters last year. Yet according to nutritional guidelines, none of the drinks were healthy. Why would loving parents do this? Perhaps because US beverage companies spent $20.7 million to advertise fun, fruity drinks with added sugars to families in 2018, according to Children’s Drink Facts 2019, a new report from the University of Connecticut’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. “I know that parents want their children to be healthy, but the sweetened drink market is just incredibly co...

What We Know (And Don ’ t) About Juul, Teen Vaping And Illness
NEW YORK (AP) — An outbreak of vaping illnesses. A surge in teens using electronic cigarettes. They’re often spoken of in the same urgent breath, but it’s not clear how — or even if — they are connected. Following a shakeup at Juul Labs Inc., the largest U.S. seller of e-cigarettes, here are some questions and answers about vaping: WHAT HAPPENED WITH JUUL? The San Francisco-based company that controls about 70% of the market announced Wednesday that it will no longer run TV, print or digital advertisements for its e-cigarettes. Juul, which rose to the top through viral marketing that promoted nicotine pod...

The FDA Is Severely Restricting the Sale of Flavored E-Cigarettes. Here ’s What to Know
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday followed through on a rumored plan to significantly restrict the sale of flavored e-cigarettes in an effort to keep young users away from tobacco products. “The bottom line is this: I will not allow a generation of children to become addicted to nicotine through e-cigarettes,” said FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb in a statement. “We won’t let this pool of kids, a pool of future potential smokers, of future disease and death, to continue to build. We’ll take whatever action is necessary to stop these trends from continuing.” That act...
