Vaccine patterns among patients diagnosed with Guillain-Barr é Syndrome and matched counterparts in a Medicare supplemental population, 2000-2020
Vaccine. 2023 Aug 10:S0264-410X(23)00947-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSome vaccines have a small risk of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by paralysis if untreated. The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines do not consider GBS a precaution for future vaccines unless GBS developed within six weeks after a tetanus-toxoid-containing vaccine or influenza vaccine. Our goal was to describe vaccine patterns before and after GBS diagnosis. We matched each of 709 patients diagnosed with GBS from 2002 to 2020 with Medicare ...

Once vaccinated, always vaccinated? A  claims data analysis on repeated influenza vaccinations among individuals aged ≥ 60 years
DISCUSSION: A large proportion of individuals aged ≥ 60 years who have been vaccinated against influenza once is likely to repeatedly receive vaccinations. In accordance with vaccination recommendations, nursing home residents and in particular individuals with an increased health risk are vaccinated repeatedly. General practitioners play a central role: non-acute patient contacts should be used to offer vaccinations, especially to women and individuals in need of care who are living at home.PMID:37291252 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-023-03716-1

Association Between Influenza Vaccination During Pregnancy and Infant Influenza Vaccination
CONCLUSION: Our results show a positive and statistically significant relationship between influenza vaccination during pregnancy and infant influenza vaccination status in their first season eligible for vaccination. Interventions to increase influenza vaccination coverage among pregnant people may also increase infant influenza vaccination coverage, offering greater protection against serious complications of influenza in both vulnerable populations.PMID:36728080 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.0000000000005101

Predictors of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among people who inject drugs
CONCLUSIONS: One year after COVID-19 vaccines became available to U.S. adults, only one third of PWID had received ≥1 COVID-19 vaccine dose. Multi-faceted approaches that dispel disinformation, integrate public health and social services and increase access to free, community-based COVID-19 vaccines are urgently needed.PMID:36697311 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.01.042

RSV Cases Are Rising in Kids and Babies. What Parents Should Know
On top of continued concerns about COVID-19 and the anticipated wave of flu cases this fall and winter, health experts are also confronting another infectious disease: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV typically strikes during the colder months, when people gather indoors and are more likely to spread disease through close contact and respiratory droplets. It’s particularly common among infants and young children, as well as the elderly, who are more vulnerable to infections because of their less developed or weakened immune systems. After years of having no vaccines against the virus, scientists are moving quic...

Vital Signs: Influenza Hospitalizations and Vaccination Coverage by Race and Ethnicity-United States, 2009-10 Through 2021-22 Influenza Seasons
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE: Racial and ethnic disparities in influenza disease severity and influenza vaccination coverage persist. Health care providers should assess patient vaccination status at all medical visits and offer (or provide a referral for) all recommended vaccines. Tailored programmatic efforts to provide influenza vaccination through nontraditional settings, along with national and community-level efforts to improve awareness of the importance of influenza vaccination in preventing illness, hospitalization, and death among racial and ethnic minority communities might help addres...
