The effect of implementing undergraduate competency-based medical education on students' knowledge acquisition, clinical performance and perceived preparedness for practice: a comparative study
Conclusions: Our data do not support the assumption that competency-based education results in graduates who are better prepared for medical practice. More research is needed before we can draw generalizable conclusions on the potential of undergraduate competency-based medical education.

Medical education and moral segmentation in medical students
ConclusionsStudents show a decline in moral judgement competence during medical education. This probably reflects an increase in moral segmentation rather than an inhibition in moral development. The challenge is to develop a curriculum that will enable medical students to maintain, or better, increase their moral judgement competence.

Determinants of physician empathy during medical education: hypothetical conclusions from an exploratory qualitative survey of practicing physicians
Conclusions: Our results provide an overview of what might influence the development of clinical empathy, as well as hypothetical conclusions about how to promote it. Reflective practice seems to be lacking in current medical curricula and could be incorporated. Raising physicians' awareness of the psycho-social dimension of disease, and of the impact of peer influence and role modeling, seems promising in this regard, too. Stress and well-being seem to be closely related to physician empathy, and their modulation must take into account individual, social, and organizational factors. Further research should investigate whe...

Interviewing in situ: employing the guided walk as a dynamic form of qualitative inquiry
ConclusionsThe guided walk method is promising within medical education, particularly for researchers seeking to gain participants’ stories in the contexts to which they refer. This method may be appropriate for use in medical education research in areas such as the evaluation and assessment of a student's clinical decision‐making skills and competency development, as well as the consolidation of strategies to manage ethical and professional dilemmas.
