Development and piloting of a blended learning training programme for physicians and medical students to enhance their competences in evidence-based decision-making.
CONCLUSION: The training programme is feasible and was well accepted by the participants. It should be established as a continuing medical education opportunity for practitioners. Evaluation in a randomised controlled trial is recommended. Furthermore, the training can easily be adapted for interprofessional training. A concept for long-term implementation is needed. Teach Learn Med. 2022 Jun 29:1-15. doi: 10.1080/10401334.2022.2092112. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProblemLGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and all sexual and gender minorities) people have unique health care needs related to their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex development. However, medical education has historically excluded LGBTQIA + health-related content in formal curricula. It is common for medical students to interact with diverse patient populations through clinical rotations; however, access to and knowledge about LGBTQIA + patients is inconsist...

Medical Content Searching, Retrieving, and Sharing Over the Internet: Lessons Learned From the mEducator Through a Scenario-Based Evaluation
Conclusions: The results of this evaluation impact researchers, medical professionals, and designers interested in using similar systems for educational content sharing in medical and other domains. Recommendations on how to improve the search, retrieval, identification, and obtaining of medical resources are provided, by addressing issues of content description metadata, content description procedures, and intellectual property rights for re-purposed content.

The role of governance in Indigenous medical education research
This article considers the role of governance in Indigenous medical education research through the lens of an Australian Aboriginal research project titled Healing Conversations. The Healing Conversations project is developing and testing a targeted educational framework for improved clinical communication between healthcare practitioners and Australian Aboriginal peoples in regional and urban locations. It is proposed that an effective governance approach can support Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders to work together in decision-making structures to enable outcomes that promote and prioritise Indigenous worldview...

Medical malpractice in robotic surgery: a Westlaw database analysis
We examined robotic surgery malpractice claims to identify trends in claimed liabilities, describe legal outcomes, and determine strategies to minimize future litigation. The Westlaw legal database was queried retrospectively for U.S. state and federal tria ls regarding robot-assisted surgical procedures from 2006 to 2013 and 2014 to 2021. Data abstracted from verdict reports included year, state, court type, defendant specialty, procedure performed, claimed injuries and liabilities, verdict, and damage amount awarded. Sixty-one cases across 25 states were identified, 16 cases between 2006 and 2013, and 45 from 2014 to 202...

Cost and value in medical education--what we can learn from the past.
Authors: Walsh K Abstract What lessons can be learned from the history of cost and value in medical education? First, the issue of cost and value in medical education has been around for a long time. Rising costs and an economic recession have made us focus on the subject more, but the issue has been just below the surface for over 200 years. A problem like this will not go away by itself - we must tackle it now. Second, the history of cost and value in medical education makes us look critically at who should pay. Should it be students, institutions or governments? We can see from the past that several different mo...

Building a community of practice in rural medical education: growing our own together.
This article chronicles the rise, decline, and recent resurgence of rural training track residency programs (RTTs) in the USA over the past 30 years and the emergence of a healthy community of practice in rural medical education. This has occurred during a time in the USA when federal and state funding of graduate medical education has been relatively stagnant and the rules around finance and accreditation of rural programs have been challenging. ISSUE: Many of the early family residency programs developed in the 1970s included a curricular focus on rural practice. However, by the 1980s, these programs were not yet pro...

Changing Medical School IT to Support Medical Education Transformation.
Abstract PROBLEM: Many medical schools are modifying curricula to reflect the rapidly evolving health care environment, but schools struggle to provide the educational informatics technology (IT) support to make the necessary changes. Often a medical school's IT support for the education mission derives from isolated work units employing separate technologies that are not interoperable. INTERVENTION: We launched a redesigned, tightly integrated, and novel IT infrastructure to support a completely revamped curriculum at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. This system uses coordinated and interoperable technolog...
