The use of social media to supplement resident medical education - the SMART-ME initiative.
Conclusion Residents believe social media could be used for medical education. After we launched a Twitter page for medical education, there was a significant increase in the use and frequency of Twitter for resident medical education over the ensuing 6 months. Further research should be performed to see if social media can impact overall medical knowledge and patient care, and whether longer term use is maintained. PMID: 28440115 [PubMed - in process]

Ecological theories of systems and contextual change in medical education
ConclusionEcological theories of systems consider change and response in terms of adaptive cycles functioning at different scales and speeds. This can afford opportunities for systematic consideration of responses to contextual change in medical education, which in turn can inform the design of education programmes, activities, evaluations, assessments and research that accommodates the dynamics and consequences of contextual change.

Characterizing the literature on validity and assessment in medical education: a  bibliometric study
DiscussionLiterature reporting on validation of assessments in medical education is heterogeneous. Literature is produced by a  broad array of authors and collaborative networks, reported to a broad audience, and is primarily generated in North American and European contexts. Our findings speak to the heterogeneity of the medical education literature on assessment validation, and suggest that this heterogeneity may stem, at least in part, from differences in constructs measured, assessment purposes, or conceptualizations of validity.

Post-residency medical education fellowships: a scoping review
Med Educ Online. 2021 Dec;26(1):1920084. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2021.1920084.ABSTRACTThe authors conducted a scoping review to investigate the structure, content, and potential impact of post-residency medical education fellowships. The authors searched eight databases to identify English-language articles describing longitudinal, post-residency medical fellowships that both focused on medical education and described the structure and content of the curriculum. The authors summarized the findings of each article and, for those articles that included a program evaluation, assessed the potential impact of the program via the ...

Integrating Emerging Infections Education into Medical Education: An Innovative Approach.
CONCLUSIONS: Most participants felt that outbreak preparedness was not adequately addressed in their curricula and almost all wanted more instruction. In addition, the didactic course and workshop improved self-reported student knowledge of the basic principles of contagious disease outbreak detection and management. Based on the results of our study, we propose integration of a three-hour simulation-based workshop with other instructional endeavors in emerging infections and biopreparedness into medical education curricula. We recommend the offering of a more comprehensive course for those pursuing emergency medicine and ...

Innovation and entrepreneurship programs in US medical education: a landscape review and thematic analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The landscape of medical school I&E programs is rapidly expanding to address newfound skills needed by physicians due to ongoing changes in healthcare, but programs remain relatively few and small compared to class size. This landscape analysis is the first review of I&E in medical education and may contribute to development of a formal educational framework or competency model for current or future programs. Implementing economic evaluation in simulation ‐based medical education: challenges and opportunities
ConclusionA properly conducted economic evaluation can help stakeholders (i.e., programme directors, policy makers and curriculum designers) to determine the optimal use of resources in selecting the modality or method of assessment in simulation. It also helps inform broader decision making about allocation of scarce resources within an educational programme, as well as between education and clinical care. Economic evaluation in medical education research is still in its infancy, and there is significant potential for state‐of‐the‐art application of these methods in this area.

‘Can the patient speak?’: postcolonialism and patient involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
ConclusionConcepts from postcolonial theory can help medical educators think differently about how patients can be engaged in the medical education project in ways that are meaningful and non‐tokenistic. Specifically, the positioning of the patient as ‘subaltern’ can provide channels of resistance against traditional power asymmetries. This has curricular and methodological implications for medical education research in the area of patient engagement.

A qualitative examination of barriers against effective medical education and practices related to breastfeeding promotion and support in Lebanon.
Conclusions: Our work using breastfeeding as an exemplary case highlights how undergraduate medical education and its learning outcomes and how medical practices and patient behavior are highly intertwined with psychosocial, institutional, and social drivers and constraints. Re-evaluating the success of undergraduate medical curricula in light of overcoming these constraints and not only based on meeting national accreditation and certification guidelines might prove helpful in improving medical education and ultimately clinical practice. Does medical education reform change who is selected? A national cross-sectional survey from China
Conclusions Assuming quality can be indicated by prior academic achievement at the point of selection, PPs achieved this mission. However, doing so limited medical students’ diversity. This may be unhelpful in achieving the Education Plan’s goal to better serve China’s health needs.
