A case study on breastfeeding education in Lebanon's public medical school: exploring the potential role of social networks in medical education.
CONCLUSIONS: Our work using breastfeeding as an exemplary case suggests there is a role for better attending to the beliefs of medical students as well as to the social side of medical education. Future studies can use social network theory to help identify and address influences on medical education outcomes. PMID: 30300105 [PubMed - in process]

A systematic review of factors influencing student ratings in undergraduate medical education course evaluations
Conclusions: Due to the heterogeneity and methodological limitations of included studies, results must be interpreted with caution. Medical educators need to be aware of various influences on student ratings when developing data collection instruments and interpreting evaluation results. More research into the reliability and validity of overall course ratings as typically used in the evaluation of undergraduate medical education is warranted.

Turkish students' perceptions of professionalism at the beginning and at the end of medical education: a cross-sectional qualitative study.
Conclusions: The formal and hidden programs determine the quality and efficacy of the professional education together. Attempts to restructure medical education must recognize the reciprocal dynamics between these two components and, thus, should carefully work out the practical aspect of the educational processes. Integrating Emerging Infections Education into Medical Education: An Innovative Approach.
CONCLUSIONS: Most participants felt that outbreak preparedness was not adequately addressed in their curricula and almost all wanted more instruction. In addition, the didactic course and workshop improved self-reported student knowledge of the basic principles of contagious disease outbreak detection and management. Based on the results of our study, we propose integration of a three-hour simulation-based workshop with other instructional endeavors in emerging infections and biopreparedness into medical education curricula. We recommend the offering of a more comprehensive course for those pursuing emergency medicine and ...

Cultural minority students ’ experiences with intercultural competency in medical education
ConclusionsAs cultural minority students were confronted with microaggressions, the medical school did not succeed in creating a safe education environment for all students. Contrary to their aims and intentions, intercultural competence activities had limited effect and seemed to support the polarisation of cultural minority and majority students and teachers. This can be seen as pointing towards a hidden curriculum privileging majority over minority students. For structural integration of intercultural competency in medical education, the focus must penetrate beyond curricular activities towards the critical addressing o...

Discourses of student orientation to medical education programs.
Conclusion By examining how orientation has been described and discussed, we identify three domains of orientation: cultural, social, and practical. These domains are relatively distinct in terms of the activities associated with them, and in terms of who is involved in organizing and running these activities. We also describe orientation as a liminal activity system on the threshold of medical school where incoming students initially cross into the profession. Interestingly, this state of ambiguity also extends to the scholarship of orientation with only some of its aspects attracting formal enquiry, even though there is ...

Innovation and entrepreneurship programs in US medical education: a landscape review and thematic analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The landscape of medical school I&E programs is rapidly expanding to address newfound skills needed by physicians due to ongoing changes in healthcare, but programs remain relatively few and small compared to class size. This landscape analysis is the first review of I&E in medical education and may contribute to development of a formal educational framework or competency model for current or future programs. Roadmap for creating an accelerated three-year medical education program.
Authors: Leong SL, Cangiarella J, Fancher T, Dodson L, Grochowski C, Harnik V, Hustedde C, Jones B, Kelly C, Macerollo A, Reboli AC, Rosenfeld M, Rundell K, Thompson T, Whyte R, Pusic M Abstract Medical education is undergoing significant transformation. Many medical schools are moving away from the concept of seat time to competency-based education and introducing flexibility in the curriculum that allows individualization. In response to rising student debt and the anticipated physician shortage, 35% of US medical schools are considering the development of accelerated pathways. The roadmap described in this paper...

‘Can the patient speak?’: postcolonialism and patient involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
ConclusionConcepts from postcolonial theory can help medical educators think differently about how patients can be engaged in the medical education project in ways that are meaningful and non‐tokenistic. Specifically, the positioning of the patient as ‘subaltern’ can provide channels of resistance against traditional power asymmetries. This has curricular and methodological implications for medical education research in the area of patient engagement.

Contemporary global perspectives of medical students on research during undergraduate medical education: a systematic literature review.
CONCLUSION: Despite the wide variations in medical education systems worldwide, the perspectives of medical students on research in undergraduate medical education shared many common themes. Globally, medical students underscored the necessity and importance of research in medical education as reflected by many students reporting positive attitudes and interest in research endeavors. Moreover, a worldwide consensus emerged regarding the decline in the numbers of physician-scientists and the necessity for a reversal of that trend. Various barriers to research engagement and participation were highlighted. PMID: 30372403...

A qualitative examination of barriers against effective medical education and practices related to breastfeeding promotion and support in Lebanon.
Conclusions: Our work using breastfeeding as an exemplary case highlights how undergraduate medical education and its learning outcomes and how medical practices and patient behavior are highly intertwined with psychosocial, institutional, and social drivers and constraints. Re-evaluating the success of undergraduate medical curricula in light of overcoming these constraints and not only based on meeting national accreditation and certification guidelines might prove helpful in improving medical education and ultimately clinical practice. Does medical education reform change who is selected? A national cross-sectional survey from China
Conclusions Assuming quality can be indicated by prior academic achievement at the point of selection, PPs achieved this mission. However, doing so limited medical students’ diversity. This may be unhelpful in achieving the Education Plan’s goal to better serve China’s health needs.
