New interdisciplinary teaching concept for the cross-sectional subject of allergology in human medicine studies
HNO. 2022 Oct 4. doi: 10.1007/s00106-022-01222-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Although allergic diseases are among the most important health disorders, allergology is not anchored as an independent subject in the clinical part of medical studies in Germany.OBJECTIVE: As all universities and institutes face the same challenge, the aim of our project was to establish exemplary coordination and networking of education in allergology at one location in agreement with all involved departments and institutes. Particularly, Comprehensive Allergy Centers (CAC) offer an established infrastructure via which the revised...

Is Body Mass Index Related to Skin Reactivity to Histamine but not to Specific Allergens? A 2-Year Follow-up Study on Korean Children
CONCLUSION: Histamine skin reactivity increased in children over time and some allergens showed increased specific reactions; however, BMI gain is a specific predictor of histamine reactivity. Further studies are needed to elucidate the clinical significance of these changes.PMID:34287086 | DOI:10.1177/19458924211032469

Endoscopic Study of the Distribution of Olfactory Filaments: A Cadaveric Study.
Abstract OBJECTIVE: Provide a detailed anatomical description of the olfactory filaments (OF) and their distribution in the nasal cavity through endoscopic endonasal dissection. METHODS: Four cadaveric specimens (8 sides) were used in this study. Nasoseptal (NSM), middle (MTM) and superior turbinate (STM) mucosa dissection was performed to identify the OF and follow them superiorly to the cribriform plate (CP). Measurements of the OF were taken on the NSM, MTM, STM under direct endoscopic visualization. A Student's T-Test was performed to compare means. RESULTS: The NSM contained a mean of 11 OF, distrib...

Impact of breathing patterns on the quality of life of 9- to 10-year-old schoolchildren.
CONCLUSION: Based on the present findings, children with the mouth-breathing pattern experience a greater negative impact on quality of life in comparison with those with the nose-breathing pattern. Thus, the early diagnosis and treatment of this clinical condition are fundamental to minimizing the consequences of mouth breathing on the quality of life of schoolchildren with respiration disorders. Comorbidities in patients with all‐positive symptoms on sinonasal outcomes test quality‐of‐life instrument
ConclusionThe SNOT‐20 questionnaire assists clinicians to monitor outcomes in patients treated for CRS. However, clinicians should suspect other underlying chronic conditions in SNOT‐20 pan‐positive patients. Level of Evidence3B. Laryngoscope, 2015

Bony erosion patterns in patients with allergic fungal sinusitis.
CONCLUSION: Younger age and African American race were found to significantly correlate with bony erosion in AFS, which indicated that a more severe inflammatory response was mounted in these patient groups. As expected, higher Lund-Mackay scores correlated with the severity of erosion. The lack of correlation with SNOT-20 scores indicated the insidious nature of this destructive disease. The level of evidence is 4. PMID: 26163244 [PubMed - in process]

Factors associated with the development and remission of allergic diseases in an epidemiological survey of high school students in Japan.
CONCLUSION: This epidemiologic survey showed that the hygiene hypothesis and intestinal bacterial flora might influence the development of symptoms and remission of allergic diseases. PMID: 25785748 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Staphylococcus aureus biofilms induce apoptosis and expression of interferon-γ, interleukin-10, and interleukin-17A on human sinonasal explants.
CONCLUSION: S. aureus biofilms induced apoptosis and a predominant proinflammatory immune response on normal sinonasal mucosal explants. This immune response appeared to be triggered by intrinsic bacterial elements but also by components of the biofilm matrix. Live biofilms were present on the mucosa at the end of the challenge, suggesting an inability of the induced immune response to eliminate the S. aureus biofilms. PMID: 25590311 [PubMed - in process]

Aspirin sensitivity does not compromise quality‐of‐life outcomes in patients with samter's triad
ConclusionsAlthough Samter's triad patients present with more severe disease and are more likely to undergo revision surgery, they have postoperative quality‐of‐life outcomes that are comparable to patients with eCRSwP who are not aspirin sensitive. This is the first study to utilize a disease‐specific, validated outcomes instrument in comparing Samter's triad patients with aspirin‐tolerant patients who have nasal polyposis and tissue eosinophilia. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2013

Teaching and assessing endoscopic sinus surgery skills on a validated low‐cost task trainer
Conclusions:The sinus surgery task trainer provides an effective means of teaching and evaluating nasal endoscopy and basic sinus surgery skills for novice surgeons. With repeated practice, there was significant improvement in performance. An OSATS using the sinus surgery task trainer suggests that we can effectively measure endoscopic sinus surgery ability with the potential to reliably determine competency outside the operating room.
