The Role of Education in the Implementation of Shared Decision Making in Emergency Medicine: A Research Agenda
Abstract Shared decision making (SDM) is a patient‐centered communication skill that is essential for all physicians to provide quality care. Like any competency or procedural skill, it can and should be introduced to medical students during their clerkships (undergraduate medical education), taught and assessed during residency training (graduate medical education), and have documentation of maintenance throughout an emergency physician's career (denoted as continuing medical education). A subgroup representing academic emergency medicine (EM) faculty, residents, content experts, and patients convened at the 2016 Academ...

An examination of the perceived impact of a continuing interprofessional education experience on opiate prescribing practices.
Authors: Cardarelli R, Elder W, Weatherford S, Roper KL, King D, Workman C, Stewart K, Kim C, Betz W Abstract Chronic pain is increasingly recognized as a public health problem. We assessed the effectiveness of a multi-modal, interprofessional educational approach aimed at empowering healthcare professionals to make deliberative changes, especially in opiate prescribing practices. Education activities included enduring webcasts, regional interprofessional roundtable events, and state-level conference presentations within targeted Kentucky and West Virginia regions of the United States. Over 1,000 participants acces...

Randomised controlled trial of online continuing education for health professionals to improve the management of chronic fatigue syndrome: a study protocol
Introduction Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a serious and debilitating illness that affects between 0.2%–2.6% of the world’s population. Although there is level 1 evidence of the benefit of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and graded exercise therapy (GET) for some people with CFS, uptake of these interventions is low or at best untimely. This can be partly attributed to poor clinician awareness and knowledge of CFS and related CBT and GET interventions. This trial aims to evaluate the effect of participation in an online education programme, compared with a wait-list control group, on allied health profess...

Impact of Social Media on Current Medical Conferences
Conclusions Social media is a quick and economic tool in promoting medical conferences and instant messenger systems offer immediate communication amongst associates. Despite the popularity of social media, the conference still has its irreplaceable role. The combination of the conference and the social media enhances the training and education of microsurgeons. Plastic Surgery Lockdown Learning during Coronavirus Disease 2019: Are Adaptations in Education Here to Stay?
This article highlighted the rapid initiatives and efforts of programs and national and international societies to support continuing medical education in conjunction with the guidelines to “shelter at home” and maintain social distancing, and possible future for expanding the reach of online academic initiatives, in addition to the role of developing virtual technologies. The coronavirus disease 2019 crisis has created an opportunity to analyze and advance online learning options to overcome the associated challenges and continue as a reliable platform even following the resolution of the social distancing requirements.

Improving MS Care with an International Videoconference-Based Provider Education and Case Consultation Program (P2.154)
Conclusions: MS Project ECHO can effectively and efficiently distribute knowledge internationally for specialty MS care. In contrast to seminars, the case-based learning in our model results in greater engagement and accelerates learning. Further exploration of this program is warranted. Redesigning continuing professional development: Harnessing design thinking to go from needs assessment to mandate
AbstractBackgroundThe world of medicine is constantly changing, and with it the continuing professional development (CPD) needs of physicians. As the CPD landscape is shifting away from unidirectional delivery of knowledge through live large group learning (conferences) and is placing increased emphasis on new approaches for skills training not taught a  decade ago, a new approach is needed.ApproachUsing design thinking techniques, we hosted a  full-day retreat for emergency medicine stakeholders in Hamilton and the surrounding region. Prior to the retreat we collected medico-legal data on emergency physicians in our re...

BASHH annual conference
Conferences organised by medical societies are an important calendar event of the academic, professional and social lives of medical specialties. It is estimated that globally there are more than 10 000 medical meetings per year.1 Accessing continuing medical education has become more challenging due to significant time and financial pressures on clinicians and scientists. Moreover, there are some serious arguments for not holding scientific conferences: the carbon footprint of holding such events (eg, the 2007 American Thoracic Society conference in San Diego generated an estimated 10 779 tonnes of carbon from a...

A Novel Approach for Needs Assessment to Build Global Orthopedic Surgical Capacity in a Low-Income Country
Visiting surgical teams are a vital aspect of capacity-building continuing medical education (CME) in low-income countries like Haiti. Imperfect understanding of the genuine needs of local surgeons limit CME initiatives. Previous paper-based needs assessment efforts have been unsuccessful because of low response rates. We explored using an electronic audience response system (ARS) during a Haitian CME conference to improve the response rates and better assess needs.

Bridging the Gap in Global Advanced Radiation Oncology Training: Impact of a Web-Based Open-Access Interactive Three-Dimensional Contouring Atlas on Radiation Oncologist Practice in Russia
AbstractRadiation oncologists in Russia face a number of unique professional difficulties including lack of standardized training and continuing medical education. To combat this, under the auspices of the Russian Society of Clinical Oncology (RUSSCO), our group has developed a series of ongoing in-person interactive contouring workshops that are held during the major Russian oncology conferences in Moscow, Russia. Since November 2016 during each workshop, we utilized a web-based open-access interactive three-dimensional contouring atlas as part of our didactics. We sought to determine the impact of this resource on radiat...
