Analysis of Absorbable Hemostatic Packing Compared to Physiologic Hemostasis in Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery With or Without Septoplasty.
CONCLUSION: This first reported prospective randomized study of patients with nonstrict selection criteria found AHP made no significant difference on subjective and objective postoperative outcomes as compared to physiologic hemostasis. Previous AHP-specific studies have shown differences in carefully selected patient groups. Generalizing study-proved benefits of specific AHP to all AHP is shown to be not appropriate. Time to Develop More Clinician Educators in Allergy and Immunology
Clinician educators in the field of allergy and immunology (A/I) in the U.S. teach and assess trainees (medical students, residents, fellows), provide professional development to primary care physicians and advance practice providers, and are essential in developing a pipeline of academic A/I specialists. The U.S. appears to be facing a shortage of clinician educators and academic allergists in A/I, based upon data from Doximity and the Association of American Medical Colleges. Without adequate numbers of A/I specialists focused on medical education, institutions will find it difficult to train fellows and introduce the fi...

Readability of Printed Online Education Materials on Pituitary Tumors: Untangling a Web of Complexity.
CONCLUSION: There is a significant misalignment between the reading level of patients and the readability of pituitary tumor POEMs. This may lead patients to misconceive their diagnoses, management options, and prognosis. PMID: 32460599 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors Important in the Selection of a Rhinology/Skull Base Surgery Fellow: A National Survey of Fellowship Directors.
CONCLUSION: Numerous academic achievements and personal characteristics are given consideration in the Rhinology/Skull Base Surgery fellowship selection process, but recommendation from a trusted colleague and performance on interviews were viewed to be the most critical factors for fellowship programs in selecting applicants. This is consistent with studies that have explored the selection process for other otolaryngology fellowship programs. PMID: 32777928 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk Factors for Rhinosinusitis After Endoscopic Transsphenoidal Adenomectomy.
CONCLUSION: This is the first study to investigate preoperative sinonasal disease as a risk factor for PRS after eTSA. The risk factors considered did not demonstrate definitive risk for PRS, although a history of prior sinonasal surgery should be investigated further. Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Ambulatory and Operating Room Rhinology Practice in the US.
CONCLUSION: COVID-19 has drastically affected rhinologic practice. There is a dramatic reduction of in person care in the office setting and surgical management of sinonasal and skull base disease. Enhanced PPE is being used in only half of potentially aerosolizing procedures which represents an area of further education. Novel approaches such as use of virtual encounters and point of care testing should be considered as options to facilitate care. PMID: 33019817 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical Characteristics of SARS-CoV2 Infected and Exposed Patients at a Tertiary Care Allergy/Immunology Program in Florida
Immunocompromised persons are logically thought to have increased risk of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) and Florida has one of the highest number of COVID-19 cases nationally. How allergic and immunologic disorders affect the clinical course of COVID-19 is not fully understood. Hence, we characterized the demographics, symptoms, diagnosis, comorbidities, and disease severity of patients in our academic allergy/immunology program in Florida with SARS-CoV2 infection or direct exposure to household contacts.
