Quality Improvement Educational Practices in Pediatric Residency Programs: Survey of Pediatric Program Directors
Conclusions: QI curricular practices vary greatly across pediatric residency programs. Although pediatric residency programs commit a fair number of resources to QI education and believe that resident involvement in QI is important, fundamental QI topics are overlooked in many programs, and evaluation of existing curricula is limited. Success as perceived by pediatric program directors appears to be related to the inclusion of a QI project and the availability of faculty mentors.

Informed Consent in a Dangerous Medical Resident Hours Study
In a recent post in this space, I wrote about the iCOMPARE research study that is comparing the effects of increasing medical residents' consecutive duty hours with observing the currently prescribed limits on their shifts. According to the study protocol, the primary hypothesis of the research addresses the safety of patients: that mortality under the increased residents' duty hours will not significantly exceed patient mortality under the current mandated standard for medical residents on duty. I argued that the study design is unethical based on what is known about sleep deprivation. The study's goal -- seeing whether m...

Baxter Regional Medical Center Fights to Bring Pediatricians to Mountain Home
MOUNTAIN HOME - Dr. Michael Adkins is going to be feeling a little lonely come July 15. That's when the only other pediatrician in Mountain Home, Dr. Perry Wilbur, is shutting down his practice, getting married and moving to Fayetteville. At that point, Adkins will be the only pediatrician in Mountain Home, a situation officials at Baxter Regional Medical Center say they are working to rectify. The Baxter Bulletin reports that two candidates have already been interviewed in the past two weeks for pediatrician positions at the hospital, officials there said, with the hope of hiring at least two pediatricians in th...

Structured Smoking Cessation Training for Medical Students: A Prospective Study
Conclusions: A novel teaching module for undergraduate medical students produced a sustained learning outcome in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitudes but not self-reported practice. The teaching module was tailored to the ...

Assessment of smoking in a medical center hospital - What has changed after 15 years?
Attitude of healthcare professionals towards smoking is crucial for any long-term prevention and smoking cessation program. Data were collected through a anonymous questionnaire distributed by all physicians (423 doctors), yielding 171 replies. Response rate increased from 19% in 1999 to 40.4% . All parti...

Benefits of an Informal Curriculum: Recruiting Medical Students Into Interventional Radiology
Recruitment into interventional radiology (IR) has failed to keep pace with the demand for interventional procedures [1]. The approval of a dual certificate in IR and diagnostic radiology by the ABR in 2012 will require that medical students commit to a career in IR during their fourth year of medical school instead of during residency. Consequently, there is an urgent need to prioritize medical student exposure to IR in order to sustain the specialty.
